I obviously can't count past one.

Are we expecting Heath to be a december 2019 graduate by chance? Be nice to have him on campus for the spring. I guess I am assuming we are still expecting to offer and for him to come?

Yes he's expected to get out in December. We've offered & we expect him back.

If we finish inside top 20, I'll be impressed.

That would be about the ceiling of what we've shown we are capable of.

As I posted last week, our uptick in talent is mostly due to more consistently recruiting in the top 25 rather than the recruiting volatility we've seen on other eras of MSU football. However, we haven't really done much to increase our ceiling as a program.

Point being, we could recruit 15-25 for 10 straight years & have 35+ 4 & 5 star recruits on the roster & in any given season only 1-3 players that could start for Bama. It is what it is I guess

This year, with one of our better rosters, how many could start for Bama?

Simmons
Sweat at some position
Jenkins

Anyone else?

This is why I wish we could RS guys like whop and Murphy. They weren't ready this year; but if you can sell them on RSing, we can potentially equalize some of the talent deficit with experience

I hear you, but that gets around the conference & makes it more difficult to recruit.

I think you have to play players that can help your team or you'll struggle to recruit those types of players.

Their ranking is 16th I believe but you have to look at rankings this time of year by the number of commits as well. They are already at 23 so the total points is higher than some teams per player avg just because of how many they have committed. We are almost identical but have 4 less commitments. Same number of 4 stars. Not taking away Morris recruiting, doing well but he is doing almost the exact same as Moorehead and about where Ark has been recently anyway.

With what we've gotten production wise from Whop I would have loved to have redshirted him too. But hindsight is 20/20 and considering the performance of our WRs this year can you imagine the what would be said about our coaches if he had redshirted? "WHY AIN'T WHOP PLAYIN'?!?!?!?! OUR RECEIVERS SUCK AND OUR DUMBASS COACHES ARE REDSHIRTING A 4 STAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I agree with you overall but with our WR core this year wasn't the year for redshirts. Hopefully as we build a little more depth we will be able to redshirt more of these guys that aren't quite ready.

Just like how we bitched all offseason about how dumb-ass Mullen redshirted Austin Williams. Williams gets a whole other year in a college program and proceeds to do jack shit through 9 games. Mullen clearly knew he wasn't ready for a real game, but all of us fans (myself included) heard how good he is in practice and bought the hype.

You're absolutely right Hoops, if Whop was redshirting everyone would be bitching about it

Cooterpoot
11-09-2018, 11:27 AM
I'm ok with both playing, because they need to be ready to be big contributors in year 2. You don't get that game experience by redshirting. You redshirt the ones not physically ready. Times have changed and you can't redshirt your top recruits as much anymore. Especially if they're skilled.

Not sure what the 17 you mean by this, but he's visiting them this weekend, Morris has been tearing it up, and I just wouldn't be surprised if he flipped. No I'm not an insider and don't claim to be. But no recruit is 100% committed to you if they're still taking official visits.

Brooks is coming to Vegas next week and will see us lay the damn hammer down on Arkansas. 10 hours to 4 hours from home. Opportunity to play pretty early at both schools IMO. The #13 ranking is on Rivals, but not many use them anymore. One more 4* would move Arkansas up to #9 on there though. Pretty crazy considering Arkansas will probably finish 2-10. The SEC West is just brutal. Arkansas is having its best recruiting year in decades and still could end up a close 6th in the division.

De'Monte Russell is visiting with Brooks which surprised me, didn't even know Arkansas was on his radar. Hogs already have 9 DL committed so not sure how many more they need lol.

After the play, he jumped up quickly and hopped off the field with the foot in the air. I didn't think it was a very big deal at first, but then I saw them icing it down and pulling off his shoulder pads.

We were on 2 out of state 4 star and 5 star guys and Emery was basically being a silent commit to our staff.
“Things” happen in recruiting and anyone that doesn’t understand that by now its best to not follow recruiting
Outside of Ealy who won’t be playing college ball IMO there aren’t any SEC calibure backs in the state
Also there are no SEC calibure juco RB in the state either. From what I have been told. If we go juco route if will be out of state

I wasn't aware that other state's top players were leaving to come here. Please expound on your point.

I don't see anything in the post that I quoted that says "top players" I am saying that alot of our fans think all Mississippi kids should stay home and play for us. If they go out of state they are primadonnas, If they happen to stay instate but go to OM they are bought. Why can't a kid just want to be apart of a winning tradition? If they have pride in the state and want to play here, great if not how can you fault them for their choice? It is their lives and their decision.

What about Kareem Walker from Fort Scott CC OV us in December? He started out at Michigan and was the number one RB recruit in the country in high school. The guy is a freak athletically. He's 6'1" and is listed at 215-220. I think he and Kylin Hill could be a good tandem for us.

Key or Mayden must gonna be the starter, because Fitz will run 3-1 vs the Rbs. That won't showcase the the running element of JoMos offense. We've seen that the whole season.

If he would've stayed & played another down, his career would be over because he would've played in more than 4 games

I can't ever blame a guy for doing what's in the best interest of extending his career.

look at Garner Minshew. He's gone from 3rd string at Bama or finishing at East Carolina to likely a shot at an NFL career just because he transferred. Do you think it was wrong for Minshew to leave East Carolina where he would've been the starter?

I saw Mayden play in high school & he is/was very good.

One thing to keep in mind though, Mayden's team had I believe 10+ D1 signees on the team. That Sachse team was loaded with dudes going to Oklahoma State, Baylor, SMU, Penn State, etc. Ridiculous amount of talent. The night I watched them it looked they were playing against the school for the blind.

I don't know as much about the talent or lack thereof that Shrader is playing with, but Mayden was basically a Bama QB last year with incredible protection & wide open WRs.

High school stats do have to be taken with a grain of salt at the high school level for most positions.

I Think 95% of stats at the high school level need to be taken with a grain of salt.

I think at the extremes, they can be useful.

For example: whether Mayden & Shrader had a 50% or 70% completion % is completely useless & means nothing. It's about physical talent.

However, if Mayden or Shrader had a 30% completion % or an 80+& completion would be useful.

If a first round baseball player hits .220 his SR year of HS, it's a concern. If he hits .750 it can also be useful, but, if hitting .275 - .600 is pretty useless information.

Stats can also help you know what questions to ask a player.

I see a lot of folks say they don't want Bryant and I can't understand why. If he comes in and competes and wins the job then great. If he comes in and doesn't win the job, we know we have someone the coaches like better. Worst case he can be a backup. We've had QB's go down in the past. Another reason you take him is, even if he doesn't win our job, it doesn't mean he couldn't win Arky or Auburn's job. If that's the case, you just improved your odds against those two teams. He can't beat us if he's standing on our sideline.

As far as being a cancer in the locker room, I really don't think a guy can come in OUR locker room and in one year cause trouble among teammates. I think our team is too united at this point to have this happen, even though we lose a lot of Sr. leaders. We've had some in the past not so much and it could have happened. Not at this time in my opinion. Hell, we prepared and went out and beat a Heisman winner with GA's when we could have gone to a bowl and partied the whole time. I say let's get him.

I know he visits this weekend, but I saw where he already said when he was going to announce where he was going to go. Does that mean anything? As in, has he already decided before he visits us? I really don't see him wasting his time visiting if he already has a school in mind. It's not like he's in high school and just wants to take a trip. I'm thinking he knows he's finishing his trips and has just set a deadline to decide and announce. Of course, he could change that if he desires. Any thoughts?

Exactly you have to judge more on physical ability moreso than stats at the high school level. Stats I would guess are probably the most useful for high school running backs. With receivers their stats are so dependent on what kind of QB their high school team has and also the fact that they are going to be bracketed most of the time at that level. There are no consistent objective stats with high school offensive linemen. Defensively most high school teams are going to run away or scheme away from the elite defenders.

I think as far as the announcement he just wants to move on to the next stage as soon as possible. It sounds to me like he is going to pick us if the visit goes well. Just a guess based on rumors and things like that.

I like the fact that he has performed against SEC competition- Auburn, Texas A&M, and South Carolina on the road and then Alabama in the bowl game. That has to help with the learning curve because he has been in a SEC environment before and has won before. Including against the best team in the league.

One thing I like about Bryant after looking at his stats against SEC only teams- at least 65% completion rate in every game except against Alabama where he was at 50%.

People putting a lot of stock in our backups are garbage. We basing this off hear say and rumours. Heck we heard Fitz and the WRs were lights out in practice. We haven't seen Key or Mayden enough in live action to throw them out with they bathwater. But have seen a HC too stubborn to adjust his offense to fit his talent. We have seen Fitz suck it up multiple games, yet again JoMo resisted change.
Same HC burn Keys possibility to red shirt with no meaningful snaps, my bad SFA. Now we want a 1 year rental that MAYbe better than Key or Mayden? I would rather use that spot for a red shirt OL or WR, Lord know we need options and depth at both.

1. Some of us tried to tell everybody our receivers sucked.
2. Key didn’t want to redshirt. Reports from camp have been he’s struggled with the offense.
3. Mayden was dropped by Penn St. when Jo was there.
4. We are loading up on OL and WRs

I agree with the refusal to change his offense much though. I’d take Bryant if he wanted to come.

This is ACC last year sorted by rating. Bryant wasn't a top 5 acc qb. Clemson had 2 WRs taken in the nfl draft last season (there are more NFL WRs on the roster) and renfrow. They also had an nfl RB. In yards per att, he was 8th in the ACC at 7.0 yds. That's with nfl WRs! 7.0 yds/att would be good for 11th in the sec this season. He's a dink and dunk guy that was surrounded by elite talent.

KB: 12/17 (70.6) 205 yds (12.1 per) 1 td 0 int; 15 rushes 54 yds (3.6 per) 1 td

NF: 14/22 (63.6) 241 yds (11.0 per) 2 td 0 int; 16 rushes 88 yds (5.5 per) 2 td

I?m not sure why we are comparing KB to Fitz. I think everyone would be happy to have another year of Fitz. We are possibly bringing in KB because we don?t have anything comparable to Fitz after he leaves.

I think the bottom line is that if our coaches believe KB can help us win bring him in. They see these kids every day and if it's true that KT isn't picking up the offense then let's don't try and fit a square peg in a round hole two straight years. Let's get a one year rental and let Mayden and Schrader battle it out in 2020.

Y'all are comparing him to Fitz. Compare him to what we've got next year. That's why we're recruiting him. Nobody is saying he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, he's just better than what's on campus next year. We can win 7+ games with him and then turn it over to Shrader. That's what we're looking for. We aren't looking at winning a natty next year.

Then you don't want to hear about what we've got on campus right now. Hell, they can't even beat out Fitz. They wouldn't beat out Bryant either. This is for one year to keep the bowl streak alive and the fans somewhat happy until we can get our WRs and QB in here.

Ditto... And KB ain't it. It will be a replay of this year. KB coming here may be worth 1 extra win. But why upset the depth we have at QB. While some think next year is gap measure before Schrader gets here, again why not let Key and Mayden get the experience through live action. Prove those guys can't get it done. Those guys couldn't have been that bad not to play KU, FL or LSU when Fitz was hot garbage. Moorhead hasn't shown consistency all season. So just maybe his confusion infected his QBs. Only side of the ball that had an identity was the defense. You knew what you were getting week in and week out

So you throw out rumours these guys suck? What make you think KB can get it done in JoMo's offense? He'll KT is 2-1 and shown the ability to throw. Look like he had know problem on where to go, unlike Fitz at times. KT's mechanics does need work, but that's coaching not mental.

Blake sims led Alabama to the CFB playoff and completed 65% of his passes. When he finally met up with an equal team though, sims was a total liability (3 ints vs Ohio st). Same thing happened last season with KB vs bama where he was abysmal. KB would be a great solution for us if we had a talent advantage over the teams on our schedule... unfortunately, we'll be at a deficit in a bunch of sec games

Bryant is officially visiting this weekend. We actually have a shot at him. Incrediblely dumb that some posters on here don't realize that's a good thing. Nothing against KT but he completed 42% of his passes vs SFA. Bryant is an upgrade. He's smart, he's accurate, he can run, he's played in huge games. He doesn't need to clear space on his mantle but he would be a great fit for us and for him. He would also give us another good measure on Moorhead.

This kid is a passer, as much as I love Fitz, Bryants mechanics, the way he manipulates the pocket, reading defenses and his touch on the deep ball(and he can run enough)is far ahead of Fitz, and probably anyone we have on the roster at this point. Be a good bridge to Shrader, IMO.

You can't just go solely on TD passes. The offensive style in general, especially in the red zone dictates alot of that. Now what is a good indicator is completion percentage which I see you conveniently left out because his career completion percentage is 66%! Fitz...54%. Remind me again the percentage Moorhead said he needed to run his offense proficiently?

That is how i have seen KT as well. He look raw, but given some time, he may be exactly what we need.
As I see it, he threw the ball pretty well game one this year. Given a few more weeks of tune ups and he may have surprised a few of us. We may be a better team today if he had that shot. It is both fortunate and unfortunate that he didn't have that chance this year. If for instance, Fitz' last year was last season versus having one more year of eligibility, we would probably have won exactly the same amount of games this year and KT would have 10 games consecutive under his belt. As it is now, it looks like we have a question mark entering next season with the QB position.

Now seeing how this year has turned out, I almost would have preferred KT taking us here because it serves next year a big service.

So if you want to win games, you better find a QB. 7 has lost his damn might with this. He'd rather sign a 5 foot tall guy that plays in CUSA but the ACC sucks? LOL

Bc he can actually throw the ball. I like the fact he elevates his team too, not drag them down like KB. North Texas offense is getting better with fine. Look at Clemson scoring offense the last 4 years: 45.7, 33.3, 39.2, 38.5. Which year do you think Bryant was the qb? I'll give you a hint... the lowest. Clemson has only been below 16th nationally in scoring offense the last 4 years the year Bryant was qb; they finished #33

He was sandwiched between Deshawn Watson & Trevor Lawrence. A 1st Rd draft pick & a future #1 pick. It's not like he's on their level.

I agree. The recruiting thread has now been hijacked by 7. Nothing surprising there. :(

Everybody remember what I said about blinders?

You can't present facts here on the board. They always ruin a good stance. - DGD

Sure you can, just not to morons. You are arguing with a guy whose football knowledge consists of Googling stats and posts 32 times a day... EVERYDAY... for four straight years. Think about that. Hahahahaha!!

IKR... he really, really should start his own board. As many on here, I'd donate but not join!

If we get hall (expected), that'll be 5 DEs with 4 listed at 4-stars. We're killing it here. We also return some good DEs. Which of the DE recruits do you expect to RS next season? Which ones will outgrow DE?

I would imagine Pickering and Moore will be DTs just based off of their size. Pickering is listed as 286 lbs. and Moore is at 268.

Yes both of them are gonna be DTs. Pickering is gonna be a beast. He's a hard worker and driven to be successful.

Not trying to beat a dead horse here, but I want to mention something. 7 has mentioned all the downsides so I am not looking for an argument here. Just a simple answer to these questions. What would landing KB do for the rest of our recruiting? Would it bring us national positive publicity? Would WR recruits maybe look our way? Is there any way this helps us land other cruits???

Landing KB would be a huge win for this staff publicity wise. I don't think it would affect HS WRs though bc he's a 1-year guy. Could help with Payton (juco)... not sure how hard we're pursuing

Hall is an OLB. Pickering is a DT. Jack Harris probably starts out at LB. Pickering likely the only freshman DL to play next year.

For some reason I thought hall was around 250 lbs. I looked and see he's 210-215. I like the defensive recruits better now that I see they aren't all the same position

We got some real studs coming on defense to go along with what we have on campus already.

One thing we still aren't doing the best job of is recruiting 4-star CBs. This is really the only thing I can criticize at all on defensive recruiting the last few years.

Yeah true but I love the job Shoop has done with our secondary but always nice to get the blue chippers and he could do even more.

James is a 4 star. I don’t care what rankings say. Emerson is legit too. This will be a sting DB class.

Love hearing that! This year we've had so many injuries in the secondary but we've had the backups step up and we haven't missed a step. Give Shoop more talent like this and it's gonna be even better.

The corners we have now aren't 4 stars. However, they are playing elite. It's all coaching. Stop worrying about a beat writers ranking to tell you how successful a football player will be. They're not NFL professional scouts. ANY SEC offered kid is talented. Give him the right tools in coaching and he'll succeed.

Elias Furge is going to be a good one he was under rated.
