It's definitely false that "nobody gave it much thought," just not as many decades ago as do now.
In 2013 Snyder said in an interview that he would never change the name. He even said something to the effect that you could put the word never in all caps. It wasn't until Fed Ex, Nike and Pepsi decided to show support for a name change that the team decided to do a "thorough review " of the name. Nike even went so far as take all Redskins items off their website.
