For all the hoopla about "Dan the Offensive Genius" we never were ranked all that high.
Mullen's offenses were up and down in his nine years at State. 2014 was obviously a high point (8th nationally in offensive S&P+ ranking), and 2015 was, overall, pretty good as well (top 20 nationally in offensive S&P+). But in numerous other years, the offense was pedestrian.

As for Napier, this year's ASU offense is a bit of mixed bag, but probably performed a little better than our 2017 offense in context. Higher S&P+ ranking (ASU's offense - 38, State's offense - 65), and better in-conference stats for scoring offense (ASU 4th, MSU 7th), 3rd Down Conversion rate (ASU 2nd, MSU 3rd), yards per play (ASU 7th, MSU 13th), and Red Zone TD% (ASU 2nd, MSU 8th). ASU's offensive line didn't play as well as ours (in either sacks allowed or TFLs allowed), though interestingly they dominated their conference in time of possession, just like MSU did.
