Austin Howell holds a State offer. Watch his highlight film on 247, he?s a beast. Really good player under the radar. I think he?s a starting LB in a year or so for whoever gets him.

I know a little bit about this one. Not far from here. Played at a tiny single A school. Legit 4.6. Extremely strong. 400 bench. Close to 600 squat. Our starting QB was telling me about him this summer. Definitely worth a shot.

Washington State QB Jayden de Laura has entered the portal.

227-359, 63.2%, 2,798 yards, 7.8 avg, 23 TDs, 9 INTs.

Didn't play the full season, but those are solid numbers. Throw him an offer and see if he wants to compete with Will. Probably won't, but it'd be worth looking into.

DeLaura is a good dual threat talent, is tough can run it well and has a good arm......however, he likes to improvise on his own and right now I think would drive Leach crazy by not patiently progressing through his reads. If he holds the clip board a year and Leach could develop h8m, he’s got a high ceiling. He could do a lot of what Corrall could do.

Austin Howell would be a four star if the rating services were worth a darn. I’d go as far as to say he’d be a really good starter for State. Really athletic and just a hard nosed physical player.

Thought that was one player last year???

One is announcing in his mothers birthday and has already signed, the other is signing with his school.

Or am I missing two secret commits?

Well. Find out if the staff really wants him. Because he really wants to be there. Otherwise he’s going to Troy.

And no. You can’t guarantee getting him in the portal. They need to get him now.

Just so you know. Our starting QB I was talking about just signed with Troy to be their shortstop.

If I had to choose between Brownlee and Mingo, I?d take Brownlee all day and twice on Tuesday. He is a blue collar player that excelled on a really crappy team. Mingo has yet to show anything that is consistently impressive. The only positive Mingo has over Brownlee is that he played his HS ball with Rogers, so there would be a definite comfort and familiarity already in place.

I would take them both. He could be Will's Austin Williams in 2023 after Austin leaves. Brownlee kind of reminds me of Polk a little bit.

If you wouldnt take Tylan Knight you either dont know him or havent watched him. He is a ball player and a great kid. And that is coming from someone who hates Purl and Ole Miss with every fiber of my being.

He pretty much won them the game, if you call it that last year with the fumble at the goaline.

Hartsog is a winner and we should be on him if we are not. He would be a great fit here he us our type of kid

Tylan Knight has entered the transfer portal due to lack of playing time. I'm not sure why posters ever disagree with me.

May be unpopular, but I wouldn't have taken the Northwestern WR just yet. Not saying he can't play, but he has 1 career catch. We just don't know.

RJ Sneed from Baylor is visiting today. That's a guy I really want. Trea Shropshire from UAB is also in the portal. He's a very productive WR. But we likely can't take both of these guys because taking 3 WRs from the portal is a little much.

I really want Sneed though.

I care about production. It trumps potential any day of the week.

That's not a knock on this kid, because he hasn't had the chance to have production.

But it's worth noting that both WR transfers combine for 3 catches and 25 yards. We're losing a guy who caught 105 for over 1,000 yards.

I would've taken a proven veteran like RJ Sneed and then chosen one out of Mosley or Robinson. But the Spurrier thinks what we have is good enough. So that's good enough for me I guess.

Let people sleep on these guys. State is stacking talent and guys like this are hard to come by. He is big, fast and talented! He redshirted, then was injured, had surgery and is here with 3 more years of eligibility. He could be in the mix as early as this fall.

I never even thought of us needing WR?s but these two definitely are takes and damn proud to get them! There will be 8 guys making plays from the WR Position group and they just got more talented.

To me, the one big thing we have always needed at State, and especially in this offense, is a big WR that can just go up and win 1 on 1 balls. This kid seems to have the build, and UGA seems to teach high pointing the catch as well as anybody based on their WR history. So maybe he can be that guy. I know our offense is built on finding the open man in space, but it's nice to have a fall back plan that you can just throw it up to when you see them in single coverage and a blitz is coming. The best teams always have one of those guys. It's why I feel like the Bengals could slip up and make some noise in the playoffs...bc they seem to have started realizing that about Jamar Chase the last few weeks. A lot more back shoulder and just letting him beat his man on a jump ball. Not saying any of our guys are anywhere close to Chase, but hopefully y'all see what I mean.

It's not just about next year. The guys coming in have multiple years left. They also bring upgrades in speed - which as much as our WR Corps has improved it still has been needing speed. Also don't look at this as replacing Polk. These guys are placing Torbor and spots that haven't been producing.

WhiskeyPirate
01-15-2022, 01:39 PM
Leach and Spurrier know exactly who and what they need at wide receiver. Leach has had big physical receivers in the past that wall off the db Like a power forward and get the fifty fifty balls. Also we need receivers who can block. This guy fits the bill.

A wideout playing in a run first offense as a freshman doesn’t mean jack statistically.

Exactly, in 2020 at Cal Polk only had 17 catches for 183 yards for the season. If all we were interested in was proven production we would have never taken him.

MetEdDawg
01-15-2022, 02:56 PM
If we are talking about taking a grad transfer, then yes we better be concerned about production.

But if we are talking about guys that have been at a school 1 or 2 years, there's a lot more potential involved in the transfer side.

We would have taken Robinson out of high school 2 years ago. Some of these talented guys can't break through on teams with a crap ton of talent. So you get them for 3 years and see what they have. That's how we have to work the portal to get talent.

Staff has done a solid job in the portal so far.

A lot of people have taken a step away from MSU Athletics in the last 4-5 years. You hire assistant coaches on the ability to recruit. You have Bumphis and Peeler out there and instead you are going to promote from within? Thats either cost cutting or Laziness.

Your anger is misguided then. Be mad at Leach not Cohen.

It is lazy, but if you can’t tell, Leach is a lazy ass guy. He’s probably the laziest head coach in the country unfortunately but it’s who we got. No AD can tell their head coach what position coaches to hire, doesn’t work like that.

If he is lazy, how have we signed the class we have? We don't recruit Top 25 on reputation. So he and his staff must be doing something.

Doubt we would have beaten the number of ranked teams we did this year if he was lazy. Mullen couldn't lick his way into as many as Leach did.

That narrative of Leach laziness I think is idiotic and not able to be supported.

Name for me one non lazy staff in the entire country that has a lazy head football coach.

Staffs are driven by the head coach. They don't just randomly do things by themselves. It's coordinated under the vision of the head coach. If the staff isn't lazy, the head coach isn't lazy.

Not saying it has been perfect by any means. But no successes? A&M, AU, and LSU away are big wins in the SEC. NC State and UK were good wins. I am not about moral victories but the UGA game was one of the gutsiest performances I have ever seen by any sports team.

The Memphis game and both Ole Misss games were big letdowns obviously. Although we pulled it out the La. Tech performance was a head scratcher. The bowl performance this year was downright terrible.

I think it would be fair to say Leach has been inconsistent, including flat performances. But to say there have been no success at State is just off the mark.

Are you serious? He's had two of the biggest comeback wins in school history and we were able to beat a couple of top 25 teams last year not even counting Texas A&M. With a team of mostly sophomores and juniors and almost no seniors. And we have a QB being mentioned as a potential Heisman contender while our recruiting is close to top 20. We set the SEC passing record in his first game too.

Pretty much agree , I’d throw the COVID year of 2020 out. It was like an extended version of spring ball.

Biggest factor right now IMO is the o line. That’s probably what success or failure next year hinges on. As immobile as will is, you really can’t allow any pass rush.

The NCAA clearinghouse for one. The school the player is transferring from plays the biggest roll as they have to transmit info to the NCAA and MSU, and the NCAA has to clear them first.

They traditionally have not figured into your signing class. I think 247 is rating the portal. It does not do a good job of evaluating what you lost or even needed. So, a great portal class is good but what if you don't need it? I like to look at team talent composition but it won't be available for next year's team until team rosters are finalized. His rating out of HS is not all that but an OL can grow and develop so dang much after 3 years of college. Has been there 3 years starting some the 2nd year and 11 of 13 games last year. Due to RS & Covid years he has 3 years left to play. Sounds good to me for a 4th year guy.

Nice size for an IOL at 6' 4" 305lbs or so, played Tackle in 11 of 13 games last year so I would be willing to bet he can help us even if he can't be the one that moves out to Tackle. We ask our inside guys to cover more space than most and he has been playing tackle. Our coaches must have liked what they saw.

Yes,

We lost a lot of guys that had good ratings like TE's & Dual Threat QBs that brought our overall team talent down.

One thing, none of these ratings really tell the whole story. Young teams usually don't do as well as older ones and we have been extremely young the last couple of years.

If we are depending on a guy who has only played one year of OL in his life to come in and be a starting SEC LT, he must be the 2nd coming of Jackie Slater, or we have no other choice.
His technique is not good, he's a waist-bender and he lunges forward and off balance. The thing he does have is the raw material to develop, and he has plenty of that.

There has to be more to the story. It makes zero sense that the staff suddenly came to this conclusion five days before signing day and executed swiftly. All their evaluations on him were in in December; why not drop him prior to the first signing day if you thought he was a borderline player and had reason not to take his signature at that point?

A few false narratives that are being spread.
1. That he is on track to qualify.
2. That he and his family were caught off guard by this.

It is possible he can qualify but he is definitely not ?on track?. It is a looooooong shot. The staff did not lie to him. In fact they have consistently and openly encouraged him and his family to look at other schools. This did not blindside them. They knew this was a possibility and took the news much better than MSU message board posters did.

Then drop him in December. You knew he was a risk. Offer him a blue shirt in December instead of waiting 5 days until signing day to do it. His grades haven't magically tanked in 3 weeks since students returned to school. I don't have a problem with the decision to drop him. I have a problem with the timing of it. Because now our reputation is hurt in south MS. Whether some admit that or not.

He was not offered a blueshirt. He has known all along what he needed to do to sign. He was encouraged to look at other schools all along because MSU was not going to take the risk on signing day if they did not feel he would qualify. A lot of schools stayed away from him because of his grades. You are correct, his grades did not magically tank in three weeks. If school ended in December he was not getting in and it was not even close. And that is with the improvement he had shown. On paper he could still qualify but if he basically needed a flawless final semester, then 3 weeks was enough to know that was not happening. Once again, this comes from the other side of the story so choose to believe whoever. Guess we will know when it is time to enroll.

Ask the people in the Byhalia area how they feel about the Ole Miss coaching staff after they dropped Makylan Pounders a few days before signing day.

Y'all are in spin mode, and I get it, but this is a terrible look and pretty much assures we won't be getting a kid from Biloxi any time soon. That's coming straight from a coach on staff at BHS.

I find it really hard to believe we kept the family in the dark and just unknowingly drop him on his ass at the last minute, especially when committed for so long. Use some common sense. It's not like him and his family didn't know he was a grade risk anyway. Sounds to me like we gave him his best chance at coming to the SEC and he just didn't improve enough to take a chance on. The grades are on the student. Period. Kids today should know schools can't sign guys in Feb hoping they make it to school because you can't risk losing that scholarship.
Pounders is waaaay different to me. OM flipped the kid late in the game with what looks like they had no intensions of signing him in the first place. They truly dropped him on his ass at the last minute and, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think grades were a risk like they were here.

You cannot sign a grade risk kid anymore. If you accept the LOI they count against your grant allocation, irrespective of if they make it to school or not. That scholarship is gone for the term. If you cant get accepted into school you cant play football, end of story.

You are the one spinning here, the blame rests on the kid and the adults in his life who allowed him to (potentially) fail. This ain't the place for clutching pearls. Pounders story is completely different because he was a qualifier.

Somewhere there is a player who will get this scholly because he did the work.

This. And just about every school has dropped a kid for this very reason. Heck even Saban has dropped kids right before signing day. It's part of it. If you don't put in the work in the classroom you don't reap the benefits. They knew this was coming because of the lack of production in the classroom.

I'm not arguing that we shouldn't have dropped the kid bc he was a grade risk. That's what y'all are missing. No where have I said that. I'm arguing that the timing of it is wrong. You knew he was a grade risk in December. So you told him to sign in February. Then 5 days before signing day, you offer him a blue shirt. Obviously that option had not been discussed given the fact he took issue with it. Now him taking issue with it is another argument. I would've probably taken it if it were me and I felt I could get eligible. But the blue shirt should've been offered in December. His grades didn't magically change one way or the other in a month, especially since half that time was Christmas break. Luckily, for him (and us) it looks like he's gonna land on his feet at South Alabama. That's great.

In my opinion, it was a bad look, but it's all water under the bridge now.

I think its because the recruiting insiders need good relations with the high school coaches so they put that out there to stay on the high schools good side. Thats just my estimated guess as to why he wouldnt tote water for state though so its probably wrong.

As an assistant principal, I will tell you that grades can and do change in a month. Grades for first semester in a lot of public schools aren't finalized until January after we come back from Christmas Break. So as a college, you can take a kids word in December, but officially, as a school, you won't get notification of a students 1st semester final grades until the middle of January.

The school I work at in Alabama, we didn't finalize grades until January 11th. So you can get word of mouth from a kid, but as a college you don't get official grade reports until early to middle January.

I cut colleges a lot of slack in most cases in situations like this. When a students admittance into college rides on grades that are finalized 3 weeks before signing day, you can get put in some bad situations. I don't know the specifics of this one. But colleges can't technically get access to official grades until they are finalized. So it's entirely possible the outlook for this child didn't require a response from us until we were able to get that information officially.

Like I said, I don't know the specifics of this one, but I do know how grade reporting works and what colleges can and can't do in regards to accessing official grades of students, even if they are prospects.

I listened to Steve too. He only said he wished it happened earlier, but it's also on the kid to make the grades. If he makes the grades, he's at state right now. What's the parents and kid gunna tell Leach when he doesn't qualify? "Sorry we cost you a scholarship, but we won't talk bad about you now." Steve and them don't know everything. And if our coaches are that incompetent in being up front with a recruit, they really suck at recruiting. I find it really hard to believe they are that stupid(like I said, common sense.) I feel like we gave the kid his best opportunity for SEC play by sticking with him the longest until we just knew it was too risky.

His grades didn't magically change one way or the other in a month, especially since half that time was Christmas break.

Not sure if you can say that. IF his eligibilty was highly dependent on his final grades for the Fall semester and IF those final grades were not available to our coaching staff until 2 or 3 weeks into January, then our staff may just now be realizing that he is very unlikely to get eligible. Now that his Fall grades are in they do pretty much know exactly what he would have to accomplish in the Spring to get eligible and it may be more than we think he can do. None of that would have been known in December. Bottom line is that if he was ready to sign in December and we would not let him, then I think that should have been all the indication he would have needed to start looking into other options. Its not like there are any other SEC or other P5 schools rushing in to take him.

He knew what he needed grade wise to be part of this class. He didn't hold up his end of the bargain. Was told upfront that our staff needed to see that he was on track to qualify.
I know a coach on staff there and he's a great dude. RJ still thinks he will have the grades, but he missed the mark for progress for our staff. I get why both sides are miffed. Recruiting isn't always black and white. Our staff doesn't want to lose a grant and RJ thinks he will still qualify. That's the gist of what is going on. It's not like RJ can hide his grades. They have transcripts. The only problem with this is the timing. Nothing with his transcript has changed after 3 weeks of the 2nd semester.

So drop him in December. They've had his grades since December.

They've probably had his true grades since a couple weeks ago.

Grades don't get finalized and accessible officially by schools until into January.

A lot of folks think colleges get grades in December when kids leave for break. That's not true. They might have gotten word of mouth about his 1st semester grades, but nothing official until January.

When it comes to colleges taking high schools kids, I'm not going to take some kids word over what their transcript officially says. Because the transcript is what gets you qualified not a kids word.

No P5 Coaching staff is taking the word of a kid when it comes to grades.

The problem with your theory here is you are vastly underestimating the work it takes teachers and administration to grade finals, record final grades and create an official transcript. If you have any family members or friends in the education system and school administration you should know this. I bet you think teachers really have the Summer off and don?t do any work at home either. I have 3 kids in the MS public school system and a wife that has taught 20+ years?among other family and friends that are Superintendents or Principals in this State. What you are describing is not how it works. Listen to the Principal a few pages back. Maybe you are a Principal and your school is the outlier. Maybe at Biloxi High School they spend their Christmas break creating 1700 transcripts or just the ones that demanded it. Or maybe you are just wrong. The staff did not have his transcript in December. The earliest they had it was January close to mid January.

So how pissed would everyone be if we took his signature and he was a non qualifier? We would lose that scholarship for at least a year.

No one is saying we should've signed him. Not a single person.

But you are saying the staff had his grades in December when the fact is they did not. All we have heard is how he is on track to qualify. Where has that been coming from? Our staff has not been going around saying that. Have to love anonymous sources. When his official transcript came over in Mid January it showed that he was not on track to qualify.

They had his transcript from the fall. You can believe that or not.
