The real issue we had with Polk is we refused to let go when he wanted to leave- which happened TWICE. If we would have let him move along we probably would have won a NC long before 2021. IMO the biggest thing that held us back goes back to not letting Polk. So, more history! When Polk was in his prime in the 1980's there was a grand total of ZERO SEC teams that had ever won the CWS. It was a completely different era. The West Coast teams, Texas, and Miami ruled. So, if he had actually won a NC in the 1980's it would have been unprecedented. The SEC didn't win one until Georgia of all teams did it in 1990. LSU then followed in 1991. In the meantime in 1991 or 1992 Polk tried to leave to take charge of Team USA baseball and I think Ron Fraser at Miami was also trying to talk him in to succeeding him at Miami. Polk wanted to leave. Augie Garrido was rumored to want our job. We begged Polk to stay- allegedly everyone's favorite bus driver was a big part of it as well as LT. We kept Polk until 1997 and stagnated even though we went to Omaha in 1997-1998 we weren't even close to what we were in the 1980's. Polk leaves. We beg him back four years later and then decline into an average team and eventually bad. Could have easily had prime Paul Manieri at that time. Then we had to deal with the Polk/Raffo and Cohen/Byrne saga which we are just now fully and completely recovering from. Point is had we moved on we probably would have won at least one more NC or more. Thanks LT.
And yes, we need to claim the 1941 NC!
