I said a while back that Ealy prob wasn’t going to sign with anyone in Dec or Feb.
he waits till after Baseball draft and then weighs his options
And I said if does play football and baseball in college (which I highly doubt) it will be at State not OM

The chance that Ealy signs in December is less than 1%. The chance that he signs in February is probably less than 30%. He will probably wait because a guy with his ability can do that. I think there is a chance that he signs a pro baseball contract but still plays college football. I don't expect it, but it is a possibility. I do think MSU has a better chance to get him than Ole Miss. But ultimately I expect him to go full time pro baseball. But there is a lot that can happen in the next several months (injuries, poor senior baseball season, scouts devaluing his baseball ability, etc.). So he is worth pursuing. I like our chances if Ealy decides to play ball in college.

Why would he not sign in February? He needs protection just in case he gets injured. Draft isn't until June. He would be extremely unwise to not sign in February. He could always sign, have access to college resources for a few months, then get drafted and leave.

If he signed in Feb, he wouldn't be on campus to use those resources. He wouldn't report til after the draft. Plus, he'd count against the numbers if he signed and then didn't show.

Why wouldn't he be able to use the resources? Enroll in summer school on campus. He could start classes in June.
Draft is on June 3rd but who cares. He signs, he graduates high school towards the end of May, then boom he's got a month or so between the end of school and the time he has to declare.

I think he waits because he wants to keep all options open.
1. Play football in college.
2. Play baseball in college.
3. Play football and baseball in college.
4. Sign MLB contract but still play college football.
5. Sign MLB contract and play pro baseball full time.
It's about options and leverage. He is highly rated enough in football that teams will make a spot for him if he wants to play. And he doesn't really know himself if he will attend college until he sees how highly he is drafted, and by whom, and what type of money is offered.

He can still do all of that even if he doesn't sign. He can just enroll.

Ok that's what I thought. So really there's no reason not to go ahead and sign in February. Just because you enroll in school doesn't mean you have to go. I would expect him to sign in February then. That how you are reading it?

I don't know what MLB team would risk a high draft pick on a player that plays an injury prone position like RB. If he gets drafted highly the team will want assurances he will play pro ball.
Conversations will be had prior to a team drafting him. They will want to know if he is planning on playing FB in college, it's not the best position to be in if he is trying to leverage a higher slot.

Not sure why a team would risk a high pick on a baseball player after what Kyler Murray is about to do to Oakland

He gets what benefit by working out a couple weeks? None. Now, if he graduates early and enrolls for spring, then maybe. But really, he’s got access to whatever he needs anyway. There’s no benefit for him. It’ll be a moot point anyway. He’s never playing football or signing with us.

Let's say he's conditioning on his own one day after school gets out at the end of May and boom. Plants his foot wrong and he tears his ACL. If he's committed to MSU he INSTANTLY gets the full benefit of our medical staff and a backup plan in case his draft stock falls because of an injury that would keep him out of baseball for a year. If he commits nowhere, he's out of pocket for his medical expenses, OR he has to wait to get his surgery done until an MLB team drafts him and gives him access to their medical teams.
There is definitely a reason to sign, and that's just in case something crazy happens. I don't understand why people think it's bad for him to sign. Give me one reason he wouldn't sign. There's zero tying him to the university he signs with. Nothing.

He’d still get that. Signing has nothing to do with it though. And he can commit whenever he wants. It’s the signing he can’t do.

From a MSU perspective, if he signs with State and doesn't play, it's a wasted scholly for the year, and potentially a contributor we could have signed in his place. Other than that, not much of an issue.

Well worth taking a chance for the best RB in the state in my opinion.

Nobody is worth giving up a spot for. But we don’t have to worry about that.

Ealy is related to a MLB scout. I think he will get really good advice on what to do and how to handle his situation. Ole Miss will probably pay him to stay committed so that he can keep their ranking up in February even though it's unlikely he signs with them.
I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up signing with a MLB team and then playing college football in the fall. But that's just a guess.

Our problem isn't the yearly limit it's the 85. So no not really. He doesn't take part in the 85 until he's on a scholarship

No, I’m not. Not when they can commit, wait on the draft, and then sign. And no first round pick is coming to play football. There won’t be an option from the MLB team on those guys. Not as a FR. Many years we struggle to be able to sign 25 and if you cut kids to do it and kids don’t show up, you fall behind in the 85. Then you have to find kids late and those kids aren’t who you need normally.
