Man the Crystal Palace fans are nice!! Smitty you drew a good club. JstevenF welcome to the board and post more often.

The Hull City folks have been nothing but classy. Great folks over there.

Number one: Welcome to EliteDawgs.

Number two: Who do you expect to be relegated this year?

Thank you.

It's a real tough one to call this year, both at the top and at the bottom. Which hopefully will make it very entertaining.

Personally I have money on Hull, Stoke and Burnley to go down.

Hull seem to have spent a lot of money on some fairly average players and I don't think they've strengthened their squad at all this transfer window.
Stoke are selling most their good players and bringing hardly anybody in, they were already flirting with relegation last season.
Burnley got promoted out of a fairly weak bunch (with the exception of Leicester). Where Leicester have a good core squad and QPR have shed-loads of money Burnley are lacking in both departments and will struggle in the top league.

All speculation as I'm sure you know though. Plus the transfer window isn't over yet!

Gents, I've been guided here unknowingly via Smitty who has posted on our forum (Crystal Palace, for those not keeping up).

As a local and long time supporter of Crystal Palace I have a good understanding of the Premier League and English football. As a few of you are new to following English football (after a great run in the World Cup) I wanted to offer to answer any questions about the clubs you have drawn, players/managers, rivalries and transfer speculations you might have.

Welcome! Glad to have you.

Does Crystal Palace have a club the supporters despise on level with West Ham - Milwall? I follow the EPL but never heard who your Derby is with.

The Hull City folks have been nothing but classy. Great folks over there.

Great team, great fans.

A lot of the Palace fans stood in support of the "We are City" fans.
The current Rich Arab owner is trying to change the name from Hull City to Hull Tigers to boost support in Arabic and Asian countries. The FA and most supporters of clubs have stood against the change (Heritage over Money argument). So far You, and we, have been successful.

For further reading see how Vincent Tan bought Cardiff City and changed their colours, badge and almost all the staff. He ripped the heart out of the club, lost key members of staff and the fans support and they got relegated last year. Plus he looks like a Bond villain.

Okay, wasn't gonna tell Smitty but Crystal Palace has the finest Cheerleaders in the EPL. Here is my assigned team's own version the Hammerettes - they do not accurately depict the offerings of East End London....

Our key rivalry is with Brighton and Hove Albion (Brighton for short) as of some bad history between the clubs. They're in the league below us currently. We have lesser rivalries between Charlton and Millwall due to geography.

WestHam v Millwall certainly has the greatest fame for rivalry (mainly due to the violence back in the 80s and early 90s). But almost every club has a rivalry that can get . . . uncomfortable, if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Question..
Is losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona going to be a big blow to Liverpool or will the club be able to survive without him?

Question..
Is losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona going to be a big blow to Liverpool or will the club be able to survive without him?

A huge blow to any team losing arguably the worlds best striker. That said they've made some very smart signings so far and Suarez would still be serving a ban for the first part of the season and would miss games for Liverpool where they could ill-afford him to be absent.

I can't give you an absolute answer as we're yet to see how the new signings gel in the team but I would expect Brendan Rodgers to get the best for them (voted 2nd best manager last season after Crystal Palace's Tony Pulis). So long story short, you should be fine but it will still sting a bit.

Think it'll cause a pretty different style that they'll have to play. He let them win some shoot outs last year and they need to improve a lot drastically

Made his old team about 50 million euros ($75 mil), and made him a nice chunk in wages. Big difference now will be the cash he will pull in from sponsors/jersey sales/likeness. Real Madrid have a marketing plan that they will always try to have a South American superstar, and it looks like he is their next one

Hull City has released their new 2014 home kit (http://www.umbro.com/en-gb/blog/a-closer-look-at-the-new-hull-city-home-kit/). Pretty sweet, imo. Now if Sheffield United will stop being dickheads asking 4M Pounds for Harry Maguire, we might have a fighting chance.

Would still be surprised if he stays. He will likely play a lot in preseason and I think get loaned out after teams see him in the shop window. That's smarter both for bayern and Green's future. It's hard to develop on the bench, and I whole heartedly disagree that it would help him. Heard rumors of him being loaned to a club like Stuttgart in the Bundesliga who he can play for while staying close to bayern.

Last season down to purely f*ck ups we conceded 25 goals, the next nearest team IN EUROPE was some Romanian team who'd conceded 14 from f*ck ups. So warning, get ready to see players slipping up or wacking the ball into each other.

Burnley, when you win it will be great but probably will not be too often. Can't say I've ever met a Burnley supporter.

Yeah, I'd say we are the least racist and most cosmopolitan. In North London we have vibrant Jewish, Greek and Turkish communities with the more common West Indian, African, Arab, Indian sub-continent that you get in London. I live in central London so I'm in no-mans land. I know you know but we hate Arsenal. Hmmmm, hmmmmm, I dunno... it is a tough one, we have him and Benoit Assou Ekotto in the position along with youth player Zeki Fryers but I'd keep him over the other two. If he is sold then probably some time in August, though I'll always remember him for his first ever touch in a Spurs shirt against Arsenal when we hadn't beaten them in the league for years.

Not sure you guys would beat a Sevilla or Valencia right now.

Valencia are very week financial sense and could get taken apart by transfers, Sevilla are also picked upon by bigger outfits. If it comes down to the calibre of the players we are superior. For Spurs last season was painful however as we were significantly less than the sum of our parts, we have the potential to be great.

Oh, I realize the finances of teams like that are far from good. And yes, they consistently lose their best players to big clubs (Negredo, Navas, David Silva, Rakitic), but they're still beating the English clubs in Europe. Both in the CL and Europa they are winning and the English clubs aren't performing up to their financial status recently.

Swansea finished 12th in the Premier League, beat Valencia 3-0 at the Mestalla and lost 1-0 and the Liberty... last season Spurs won 1-0 against Swansea at the Lane and 3-1 at the Liberty... yeah, we could beat Valencia.

I know what you're saying, but that doesn't always mean the same thing will happen. There are circumstances that change. I'm talking about the general struggles of English clubs in the CL recently and the success of Spanish clubs in both European leagues, which has been far and away better than English clubs.

That trend is what I'm referring to, and that trend makes me lean Spanish or German when playing an English team no matter who it is

Haha that I whole heartedly agree with. Sadly tho, I don't think spurs will do much in Europe or EPL, but can really see them winning something. How do you feel about them getting rid of Gylfi. I'm not so sure Swansea didn't come out on too of that deal.

New member and Palace in exile here in CT. Joined up after Smitty posted on our forum
Smitty has pulled the plum, no doubt.
COYP! (Come on You Palace!)
As mentioned we're playing the Crew tonight (Youtube live feed link already posted by that reprobate Pistol, who btw is not, once you've worked out his username, mad but drunk :D)
For those who can't get to see the game tonight, we're playing Philly on Friday night. Hopefully there will be a feed for that game too. Should be well attended by Palace fans (yours truly included) - we have our own section in the ground (stadium) so hopefully a lot of noise!

For those who cannot sit through an entire game of football (not soccer) yet without disparing at the lack of points being racked up on the scoreboard, here's a couple of highlight reels.
This one was our finest hour in recent years - getting promoted to the Premier via the play-off. The final was at Wembley with around 40,000 Palace there (including yours truly... and keeping it topical, I bumped into Pistol in the pisser (bathroom) at half-time!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEhftups14Q

And this one from last season, when we decided who won the Premiership ;) by coming back from 0-3 down against Liverpool and leaving Suarez blubbing.
Quality's not so good unfortunately but it was an amazing 10 minutes!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSX6WBrUDbA

Smitty enjoy the ride! And to the others, have fun supporting your various picks.
Get ready for early morning starts on Saturday and Sunday on NBCSN (as an aside, the presenter, Rebecca Lowe is Palace too!)

@DudyDawg do you watch a lot of Spanish football?

Yes I do. Like I said I'm a Real Madrid fan. I watch mostly Spanish and English football, and only really see teams in Italy/Germany/France play in Europe. I would say I watch mostly English, followed very close by Spanish (and every Madrid game I can), and European after that.

I also work for the Houston Dynamo right now, so I see quite a bit of MLS

Oh Dawg61, we made our first signings today, Dutch goalkeeper Michel Vorm and left back Ben Davies both from Swansea, in return we've given them attacking midfielder Gylfi Thor Siggurdson

Question on soccer/football fan experience…

Seems to me the most coveted seats are all at the ends of the pitch in soccer, whereas you want to be along the sidelines closer to the middle in football… Is there anything to this?

DudyDawg
07-23-2014, 05:15 PM
Some of it is personal preference. A lot of it is bc in most places they put the supporters groups (fan groups who sing/chant/drum all game) in one end, kind of like a student section. If I were picking, I would like to be closer to the middle tho.

The best seats in the house are in the middle of the pitch however in the older stadia people form an affection with a part of the stadium.
For example at White Hart Lane we have four sides, Paxton, Shelf Side, Park Lane and the West Stand, the loudest parts were (these recent influx of so called 'success' has really quietened the Lane down) Park Lane and Shelf, with West Stand where the rich people who didn't sing went. Going to the game isn't all about the match it is about the experience of supporting your club, and for some people that is down to what part of the stadium they are in.

That's a good question Smitty and not one I admit to knowing exactly why. But yes, you're right, perhaps not so much coveted, but certainly the ends behind the goal is usually where you will find the most passionate of fans. At Crystal Palace's ground, Selhurst Park, it's called the Holmesdale (From the Holmesdale Road running along that side of the ground) and can be seen in my avatar.
Historically football teams in the UK have always had a "home" end reserved solely for the home team supporters and in the old days an "away" end for the visiting supporters. Of course this separation didn't always work and that usually led to trouble. Today, the away fans are not necessarily seated behind the goal opposite the home end but are segregated somewhere else within the ground. The ends of the grounds were also traditionally standing only (called terraces), not seated. it's only been since the Hillsborough Disaster that Premier league and Championship teams grounds were required to be all seaters. Being standing only, they could hold many more supporters than the seated equivalent, this improved the atmosphere and singing and tickets for these sections were cheaper and therefore more popular.
In today's all-seater stadiums the tradition of a home end still persists but without doubt the advent of all seater stadiums and the subsequent increase of ticket pricing has destroyed the atmosphere of the old days at some clubs (Arsenal being a classic example - their ground, The Emirates Stadium is known as the library :D). At Palace however, the noise and the atmosphere persists often led by a group fans known as the Holmesdale Fanatics.

Do you know what happened with the safe standing they were trying to get looked at in Parliament? Is it still on trial at a Championship/League One club.

I'm part of the 1882 Movement who are trying to bring back the atmosphere to the Lane, we're good when we can get tickets it is often too hard to get together on the big matches, it is why I love Europa league nights.

Not sure actually, but I'm not holding my breath. Don't think anything will happen until the old bill are onside with it and knowing their view on football supporters that aint going to happen soon. I don't think its on trial anywhere although Peterborough still had standing sections when they played in the Championship season before last

I do. Have the luxury being a Yank and cheering for the league and multiple teams (understand no Englishman could do that).
I learned the EPL by picking a top 4 club, mid-table club and someone fighting for relegation to follow. That was United, Fulham (McBride/Dempsey), and Sunderland. I picked United because I could see them over here and Liverpool fans made me laugh. Followed Fulham's nosedive and was amazed Sunderland stayed up.

I will remain a United fan but have been given West Ham duties for this undertaking. I look forward to reporting on the Hammers. Love their history as an outsider. Moore, Dicks, etc.

I don't. It'd be a tragedy to ban him for life imo. It's obvious that in the heat of the moment he can't control himself. He should wear a Bane mask, seriously. West Ham may FIRE their manager before the season starts. Did not realize they are being partially run by a woman business type. She has been knighted or given a golden iron or something.

Not too bad....

Geez, it almost looks like Southampton is having some sort of going-out-of-business sale... Dejan Lovren is headed over to Liverpool and Calum Chambers is gone to Arsenal. However, the Saints are 4-0 so far in the preseason.

Yeah, they've made some money, now what do they do with it? Here's an ARTICLE (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2708274/Ronald-Koeman-high-spirits-despite-lack-players-equipment-Southampton.html) from the Daily Mail.

Money quote? While well stocked on cones, Koeman seems to have little else as Southampton gear up for their opening Premier League fixture against Liverpool at Anfield on August 17.
Here's some humor on Southampton's transfers so far...

I went to the Philly game. About 100 Palace were there! Good mix of locals, ex-pats and travelling Brits. A Union fan came on our bulletin board and said we were the loudest away fans they had heard!
Tonight's game in Richmond was streamed by an excellent local guy using his phone. Over 3000 hooked up to the stream.

I love it. I probably have like six manager modes. I do one with Real (my team) one with a good EPL team like Arsenal or Chelsea. One with a player. One with a team like Ajax that I tryin to get enough job promotions to get to Real Madrid. And one with a 3rd division team where I try to get them all the way to the premier league

Idk maybe I am doing something wrong but the scouting and roster management parts confuse the shit out of me and I just wish it was much easier to trade players in that game like it is in NBA2k. Still a fun game just not as good as I was expecting.

If that transfer goes through, I expect him to be their number two for the time being. They have Kyle walker is who a decent back. But IMO he would play quite a bit and if he plays well could quickly become number 1 choice at right back. Walker is young but hasn't really gotten much better in 2-3 years, so Yed can pass him I think. Especially with the Hazards and other speedy wingers in the Prem, can't hurt to have a gazelle in Yedlin at RB

United have Valencia (Spain) tonight, West Ham remains a big ass train wreck. Thinking relegation at this point.
