Are we picking or are you assigning?
I'm excited for this. I just hope that I don't get one of the ones with a really dumb name.
I'm looking at you, Burnley, Everton, QPR, and Spurs.
I'd still take em. Those are just silly.
HOW DARE YOU SLANDER THE GREAT BURNLEY FC LIKE THAT. I can't wait to see who you get, bc Burnley will destroy them...... But now you'll somehow get Burnley bc that's how these things turn out due to the law of irony haha

1. Best player
2. Play style

Thanks in advance!
1. Midfielder Tom Huddlestone, formerly of Tottenham
2. Fairly typical English team. Their strength is in the middle of midfield, both attacking and defending. Will have to defend and try to counter attack against the bigger teams. They're a nice team size wise, do I expect them to utilize crosses and set pieces (free kicks) for goals
3. I would say bottom half, safe from relegation. 12-16 range if I had to bet

Okay, buckle in for those trying learn about Champions League. Heres how it works:
QUALIFICATION: the Champions League (CL) is a tournament (not a league) consisting of 32 teams from Europe's top leagues. Qualification is based on the final standings from each European country's league. Each of these leagues is allotted a certain number of slots, and the teams that finish in them are in the Champions league (top four at the end of the season in the English Premier League get into next year's CL, for example). The number of slots per league are based on how good that league is/how much money it has/etc.
DRAW: Each of the 32 teams are put into certain pots, based on how they finished last year and what league they are in. These pots are drawn, and eight groups of four teams are created. Teams from the same country cannot be in the same CL group.
GROUP STAGE: Each team in each group plays six games, one home and one away against each team in their group. Two advance from this group, based on the points system (just like world cup). The team that comes in third in these groups is sent to the Europa League, which is basically the NIT of European Club soccer.
KNOCKOUT ROUNDS (Round of 16): The top two teams from each group are then placed into another pot, separating the group winners and second place teams. The teams that won the group play a second place team. These two teams then play a home and home with each other, and who advances is based on goal differential. If the goal differential is the same, the team who scored more away goals advances. If both goal differential and away goals are the same, the second game (called the second leg) goes into extra time and penal ties if needed, just like the World Cup.
QUARTER AND SEMI-FINALS: The teams are put into one big pot and redrawn again. The two teams drawn play each other in a home and home, with the exact format as the round of 16 games.
FINALS: The final is held at a neutral European site in late May, and it is a one game winner take all game.
Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, I'm here. Here's some perspective of the size of this. In 2011, the Superbowl had 111.3 million viewers. The Champions League final that year surpassed 300 million
So there's only 32 teams in the Champions League tournament? I was researching it on the internet and it looked like there were about 76 teams in the tournament. But all I'd ever paid attention to was the group stage and playoff, which is when 32 teams are remaining. I was curious about how they narrowed down the 70-something teams to 32. I was trying to read up on it, but I didn't have much time to read.

Here's how they narrow it down. Basically, the tournament starts when the group stage begins (32 teams). The bigger leagues and teams (EPL, la Liga) don't play the playoff games to get into the group stage. The playoff and qualifying games are played between the obscure teams who no one really cares about. Kinda like the games between the 16 seeds in the NCAA

Hull City finished runners-up in the FA Cup this year in extra time and qualified for the Europa League. From there they could qualify for the Champions League same as through the EPL. So two shots to make it to the Champions League.

Yea, that's about the conclusion I drew when I was reading up on it. I'm excited for the Champions League. I think I'm going to be pulling for PSG again this year. If they had Ibra in the 2nd leg of the Chelsea matchup they would have beat them I think.

If hull were to win the Europa league, yes, they would then qualify for the next season's champions league.
Here is a great breakdown of how EPL teams specifically can qualify, per their site

He played for Real Madrid, Tottenham, and more, and has always been a good player. He's inconsistent tho, and can be either your team's best or worst player depending on his mood that day. But, he will likely lead them in goals (soldado too) and is their most dangerous player. I like him because he scored to beat Barcelona in the Copa del Rey when he was at Madrid

NBC Sports/NBC will have a game a week.
The site I go to to watch a free livestream of some of the more minor games is http://ifirstrowus.eu/

Espn carries the Monday game at 2-3ish. NBCSN/NBC have the Saturday and Sunday games every weekend. Champions league games are on fox/fox sports 1/fox sports 2. Spain's La Liga, Frances Ligue 1, and Germany's Bundesliga are all on BeIn sports with the bulk of those games being in La Liga

If you have comcast, all games are available on nbcsports.com. Also, you can download the NBCSports app on your phone and watch games. I'm not sure about other TV carriers, but I know comcast has this capability.

Well I've done a little studying, and we Saints have had an up and down time. Battled back from relegation in the late 2000's, we've just been back in the Premier League for a couple of years. We ended the '13-14 season in 8th position. Jay Rodriguez was our top scorer with 17, and Adam Lallana played in all 38 games.
I'm already disliking Sunderland, as they knocked us out of the FA Cup back in February AND the League Cup in November '13. It looks like our biggest historical rivalry might be with Portsmouth, currently in League Two (the third highest division behind Premier and League One).
Recently, we had 7 players in the WC, and it's nice to see an American on the team, even if it is just on the Development Squad, with GK Cody Cropper.
First match is against Liverpool, CBRunt and EBDawg better get ready, the Saints are marching on!

Leicester City doesn't have any U.S. players in the team, but they do have Captain Wes Morgan of Jamaica. Awesome.
ETA: I almost forgot last season's club Player of the Year, Danny Drinkwater. In addition to having a cool surname, he was a finalist for the Championship's Player of the Year last season.

Hey Dudy, noticed that Hull is trying to load up on young, talented Brit players. They've brought Tom Ince, Jake Livermore & Robert Snodgrass into the fold and they're chasing another young kid (drawing a blank on the name/team, but he's U-21). Was just reading an article about Hull overpaying a little for this young Brit talent, because they don't have a solid scouting network in place overseas yet. But the owner hopes to have that network up in about a year, letting them bring in some talented but cheaper players from the continent. Really like the pieces they seem to be putting into place, though. Your thoughts?

First, from a business side. Yes, they may be overpaying for these talents now, but I think they know that and are willing to do it because it makes sense from a business side. If guys like Ince, who's 21 I believe have one or two good years, they will sell them for a huge fee compared to the one they had to pay at an "overpaying" price. So its more of an investment for them as a business than them overpaying to win.
On the field, I think they'll be a good team. They have some decent pieces, and like those names, most are in the midfield. And it doesn't matter how good a striker is or a back four, if a team doesn't have a good midfield that can help defend and create going forward, they won't be worth a damn. I think Hull is building that, and thats why I think they will stay away from the relegation zone pretty easily. Granted, it isn't an elite midfield, but it is a very solid one that is improving and will improve all year with the young guys getting plenty of experience. It wouldnt surprise me if they were one of the surprise teams that can jump into the top half of the league, largely due to that midfield

Good analysis. Agree about overpaying now versus selling for more later. Seems like the owner, Bruce, knows what he's doing and is committed to putting a competitive team on the field. The one thing that sticks out to me is that Hull probably needs to look at upgrading the goalkeeper, but I'm assuming that's easier said than done. In fairness, it seems that the current guy is the GK for the Scotland WC team, but when is the last time the Scots were any good? (As someone of Scottish descent, it pains me to say that) Btw, Harry Maguire of Sheffield United is the kid I was thinking about earlier.
Here's the article (http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11661/9383124/premier-league-hull-city-boss-steve-bruce-says-british-players-are-overpriced) about our "overpaying" for the current batch of young guys and the scouting situation. Would love to get some thoughts on it.

Yeah, most of that is spot on. The problem for the lower teams like Hull, in England especially, is simply geography. A scout from a comparable team in Spain can drive a few hours to portugal, France, hell even northern africa. That gives them a chance to find talent from different countries that play a different style. English clubs are on an inland, and the all the British nations (or whatever they call themselves) play that similar style, so for teams that can't bankroll sending scouts to South America, its hard to find young talent outside of your typical english style.

Hey you're the other Newcastle owner! Welcome to mediocrity..haha. There's not a lot of news on Newcastle because they haven't done anything particularly interesting yet. I believe they've lost a guy or two on the transfer market, and the only guy that I've seen they have signed is Siam de Jong, a decent player. I'll be honest that I'm a little disappointed about not knowing a single name on their roster, but I haven't done too much research to find out who our key players are. If you do any research about our team let me know what you find! I'll do the same for you.

Tottenham talks about growth of US soccer and is expecting a tough match vs the Sounders on Saturday.
The first game of our trip to the USA and Canada is now less than a week away, with Seattle Sounders set to welcome us to CenturyLink Field for a pre-season friendly on Saturday, kick-off 1pm local time (9pm UK time).
We’ll then travel to Canada to face Toronto FC next Wednesday (July 23), before returning to the States to oppose Chicago Fire the following Saturday (July 26).
After the impressive displays of the USA national team at the recent World Cup finals in Brazil, Steffen expects our MLS opponents will reflect the progressive style exhibited by their international colleagues when we face them in the coming days.
“Football is growing in America – so is the MLS,” said our 44-year-old Coach. “You can really feel it. At the World Cup when the States played against Portugal in the first round, over 25 million people watched the game so it’s definitely getting bigger.
“We know from when we played in America two years ago how difficult it is to play against MLS teams. You can see from the fact that the likes of Clint Dempsey and Jermain Defoe – players from the highest level – have signed for Seattle and Toronto.
“Of course, we have to try to beat them when we go there and it will be really important experience for everyone.
“It’s always a challenge for every player to win games. We’re in pre-season at the moment and it’s clear to see how hard the players are working. The games all form part of the preparation for the first game of the season against West Ham.”

Basically it is free Netflix but the full version not just the limited version they do for the monthly fee. The movies are in full 1080HD or sometimes 720. It was set up for me on my laptop by my brother. Theres a certain way that you download the "app" to your downloads and then pull it up and it gives you free access to like everything you can think of and sometimes even before they hit redbox or iTunes. It's basically the coolest fu@king thing ever. Haha. I am sure if you start googling around you can find better instructions on how to download it yourself. It won't be around forever I am sure because it really is too good to be true. I think the story goes that the guys doing it wanted it to be totally free and zero profit involved so that they can't be sued for it. The streaming is already out there and all they did was just capture it and put it in a pretty little package for all to see. Nothing gets downloaded and nothing gets paid for and there's no exchanging of money by anyone anywhere for it so no laws are being broken. Again, technology is the shit. Sorry if me watching free movies upsets anyone. Let's not turn this into some weird violation of artists rights argument.

Was kinda wondering if that might not be the scenario. If he's smart, he'll go to Miami. Better weather, but more importantly, better tax laws. If he goes to NY, about 60-70% of his check is going to taxes by the time you add up all the federal, state, and local taxes there.

For example, I totally missed whatever the "SOCCER VERDICT" was about. I missed the curmudgeon drama. I haven't been reading the posts because the team updates are intertwined with unrelated chat, and stuff like that.
IMO, we need a subforum or something. I don't think we are going to get as much participation as we could if we had a subforum. Was anything about this ever mentioned for the mods to consider? Could be something like this:
Home > Forum > The Forums > Elitedawgs > Professional Sports > Soccer
Then, there'd be a perfect place for the Braves posts and shit too:
Home > Forum > The Forums > Elitedawgs > Professional Sports > MLB
Anyone with me on this?

This. Nothing will be perfect. I am more than happy with this thread and the subsequent one we get each week of the season. I suggest we stay happy with what we've got as we have several mods itchy to completely nuke this thing right now. Rocking the boat after a certain poster went on a two week long tirade is not a good idea. The post you keep asking about got deleted permanently and had a mod wanting to ban everyone so nobody wants to talk about it for fear of the banhammer.

So I started posting on a Hull City forum just to learn as much as I can, and I learned some cool stuff.
1. They will have a much more attacking style this year compared to last due to a number of pickups in the off season.
2. Their coach is, in a way, Mullenesque- beloved by the fans, hated by the rivals, made fun of for a physical trait (Mullen's slight hunch vs. Bruce's giant head)
3. **** Leeds
4. They were friendlier than I expected. By a lot.
5. Members of their team post on that forum. I was greeted by the goalkeeper.

Well, both already have. New York City FC has signed Spain and ex Barcelona striker David Villa and are also in talks to sign Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard. They definitely aren't getting any younger. No doubt about that. But Xavi would most likely be the most technically skilled player to ever play in the MLS. The only two players potentially better are Kaka and Henry. I just look forward to a day when the MLS is getting players at the top of their game, rather than past their prime.

Very true. It may be a while before we have major international players being in the MLS before their prime and keeping them here. I say about 10 more years of development of the MLS before that point, in my opinion.

I don't know if we will ever get players like Ronaldo or messi in their prime, but I do think you will see second tier players making the move here in their prime sooner than ten years. A lot of guys fell out of favor at large clubs and moved to turkey, Portugal, and other comparable leagues. The MLS is fast approaching the level of those leagues, and combined with the fact that it is in American (safe, players will get paid their money, good place to raise kids) and I think we will start to see a lot more mid level European talent in the near future

Oh I never thought that Ronaldo or Messi types would come to the MLS in their prime. The EPL, La Liga, and Bundalista are the top talent leagues. MLS is definitely a fairly good haven for second-tier players during their prime if the MLS can become a more comparable situation to international play.

Not a snowball's chance in hell. David Villa is a good, not great striker. Xavi is a very good system midfielder. He would've likely been very average for anyone other than Barcelona, but there he was very good, nearly great. Lampard is also a very good midfielder.
That all said, none of those three were ever considered the best in the world. Beckham was in that conversation consistently while at United and Madrid

Excuse me? First off, the three I was referencing were Henry, Kaka, and Xavi. Not Villa and Lampard.
Xavi's honours:
World Soccer Player of the Year: 2010
Euro 2008 Player of the Tournament: 2008
UEFA Best Player in Europe Award Second place: 2011
FIFA Ballon d'Or Third place: 2010, 2011

La Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year: 1999

La Liga Player of the Year: 2nd place 2010, 3rd place 2011
La Liga Midfielder of the Year: 2009, 2010, 2011.
FIFA World Cup All-Star Team: 2010
Euro Team of the Tournament: 2008, 2012
FIFA/FIFPro World XI: 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013

What is that you were saying? Xavi is most definitely one of the best midfielders of all time. He was voted 3rd best player in the world 3 times with two of those being behind Messi and Ronaldo.

No need to get angry haha I obviously thought you meant Villa and Lampard. I would also attribute a lot of Xavi's personal success to Barcelona's success more so than his talent, thus my argument of him being a system guy. I don't consider him one of the best midfielders of all time. You do, that's fine. I don't. He would've been the fourth best midfielder on Beckham's united team behind Becks, Giggs, and Scholes. Not mad at all. Just good discussion. I'm just unsure how you could disregard all of his accomplishments and awards. Xavi is who made tiki-taka work. And I would assume the majority of people would agree with me rather than you. Becks, Giggs, and Scholes did absolutely nothing on the world stage, whereas Xavi was the absolute centerpiece for what is said to be the greatest soccer team of all time. No offense, but to me its laughable that you put Giggs and Scholes ahead of Xavi. I can understand a debate about Beckham, but not the other two.

Reread my post. I didn't say those two had better careers or anything. I said that on THAT united team, he would've been fourth choice, furthering my point that he is a system guy. Becks, Giggs nor Scholes had what Xavi has had in Spain's team. So those things are apples to oranges. Xavi had Casillas who is probably the best goalie ever in his prime 4 years ago, Puyol, Iniesta, Torres (the Liverpool one) and more. I'm not discounting him, I'm simple pointing out the fact that Xavi has never been on an average team, he's always been on a team that could be considered top three four in the world, and it wasn't solely bc of him, whether barca or Spain.
I'm not discounting him, just saying that those accolades, to me, don't mean as much as they would for people on much lesser teams. I still think he's a damn good player with a damn good career, just not in the conversation for greatest of all time.
DudyDawg
07-17-2014, 01:02 PM
And to the world stage argument, Becks has won the champions league and 5 leagues. He's the only person to hold a title in five leagues (I believe the only one), so he's done well on the world stage, and I don't think he's ever had a team as good as Xavi's best one

Well based on that logic, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Ronaldo, Zidane, Messi, and Ronaldo (Cristiano) can't be up for the greatest of all time because they have been completely surrounded by stellar players their entire careers also. If you get rated as the third best player on the world on 3 separate occasions, and voted best player in the world by another source, I think its pretty safe to assume you are one of the greatest players of all time.
But as you said, its your opinion, and I respect that you have one.

Like I said, I think he's a great player but not in the greatest of all time talks. I think that way because those other names could go to any other team on the planet and make it a great team regardless of system because of their talent, and I don't think Xavi could do that.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-weAvDN0_Eog/U8U_d2c70lI/AAAAAAAAfVI/9o0pfv1aSn4/s1600/map-England-premier-1415.jpg
"To put it into perspective for you, the two furthest teams apart on that map - Southampton in the south and Newcastle in the north - are approximately 280 miles apart, which is just short of the distance between Biloxi and Memphis. Note that in the UK, unlike the US, it is very common for multiple teams to come from the same city (for instance yes, you can see six teams all from London), which is part of the reason that club rivalries are vitriolic as it's near impossible to avoid bumping into fans of rival clubs even if you're just walking down your road to the local corner shop."
I guess the guy is familiar with Mississippi haha... Either way, that would be insane to basically have a league of 20 professional teams in that small space.

LOOKS LIKE (http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/11349565.Pelle_nets_brace_in_Saints_pre_season_rom p/?ref=mac) my Saints had another easy preseason match- 6-0 over some Belgium team. Graziano Pelle scored twice in his debut. We also did some heavy rotation during the half; I guess trying to get as many feet on the field as possible during the preseason.
Brad Stevens, that map is great.

-Swansea City AFC drew 1-1 with Chivas de Guadalajara of the Mexican Premier League in a friendly played at Miller Park in Milwaukee Wednesday. The Swans conclude their Preseason US tour Saturday vs Minnesota United FC of the NASL (who knew?).
-Spanish mf/st Michu loaned to Napoli of Serie A for the duration of the upcoming season, with an option to buy outright. Michu scored 28 goals in 63 matches over two seasons with Swansea.
-The pikey bell-ends from Everton will get theirs on Nov 1.

Cambridge has 2 professional football teams.
Cambridge United FC and Cambridge City FC
Cambridge United is currently in the fourth tier of English football
Cambridge City isn't any better.

From my post on their board I have been told that
A. Crystal Palace fans are the best in England.
B. they chant and sing all game no matter what.
C. They, like MSU, are referred to as a roller coaster type team.
D. Strong D and counter attack, USA style play.
E. rivals are Brighton
F. Many said I was extremely lucky to draw Palace.
G. Rooting for a smaller club is 1000 times better than a big one
H. They really don't get geographical differences. Was told to try to make their game in Columbus OH next week.

Saw the London thing and decided to post, particularly in support of Smitty and CPFC. Facts are girls that Smitty is the lucky one because despite all of the hooligan stuff (which is all old stuff that just doesn't really happen anymore) we, CPFC, are the noisiest fans in the PL. Here's a pic of London for you so you know where your teams actually are, there are other clubs in other division in London too but I haven't added them.

And this is us lot from last season at Arsenal's ground, filmed by an Arsenal tourist. We're losing the match but doesn't really sound that way does it...... :D Listen carefully on 20 seconds at the woman surprised at what we're doing "Oh my God they're jumping up and down"

Pretty similar thing at all the grounds, Palace making the noise. NOBODY does it like us.

Classy move by the Sounders and the Spurs. 18 year-old Make-a-wish kid started the match and got a free run on goal which was eventually saved. But still very classy for them to do that. Dempsey is playing against his old squad in Tottenham.

My friend is going to be so pissed if Seattle wins or even if it's a draw. He basically made it sound like they had no chance in hell to win this. That the BPL was so far above the MLS that even Tottenham should win this game 5-1 without really trying.
