What are they, I wanna follow one or two
I follow @espnfc for most of the score updated and transfers. They won't always post rumors, usually just report the done stuff. They will post a link to the English "Daily Mail" newspaper which is good for transfer rumor talk. There are more handles like GeniusFootball that post a lot of dumb soccer jokes and stuff but will also post transfer rumors before the papers and Espn or fox soccer

Would be good for them, I think better from green than anything. He won't be main guy but will get some good first team games in and it will help him adjust to the physicality of playing top flight ball. I would imagine it would be on loan, but bayern has a ton of attacking power so they may just sell

Well Aston Villa is about to be sold so I think that's putting a bit of a damper on any buying or selling that we could be doing.

Depends on who's buying. A lot of oil people are starting to buy clubs and pump I'm huge money in transfers (Manchester city, PSG). So it could be good if he's buying to pump money in

Dudy, what can you tell me about Hull City? I went over to their official page last night and did a little homework. After skimming the history, seems to me that they're a pretty pathetic team with constant money issues. Figure I'm screwed trying to keep up with them.

I agree. It could be good in the end. Looking at the past 3 seasons, something needed to be done either form the management spot (which kinda got addressed) or the owner. May not see anything out of it this season but in the future, it could prove to be profitable to the club.
Two American billionaires? Interesting

Hull likely won't be the worst team in the league. They've been in and out of the first division and are a decent team. Their strength is in midfield and defense. Their best player is Tom Huddlestone IMO, a holding central midfielder. They are a typical lower level English side. Will sit back, defend, and the buildup will be slow and predicated around getting numbers into the box and crossing it in. I would project them to stay in the first division, but they will have a fight to do so most likely. Would project them between 14-17 if I'm being conservative. Not the worst team, but won't be terribly exciting haha

Hull City just made it to the FA Cup final vs Arsenal a month ago and barely lost 3-2 in extra time. It is considered Hull City's greatest accomplishment in their 110 year history so you are taking over a team that is playing their best futbol.

I'm going to follow Aston Villa this season for sure but I'm most likely bound to be a Liverpool fan/follower since one of my best friends is a huge fan and has been trying to get me into it for the past two years. That and I know most of the players. But for now it's all about the Lions/Villans

I would hate to see Julian Green to Tottenham unless it's on loan. He's come up through the Bayern Munich system, and it would be massive to have an American player emerge into playing time for them.
I know their fans don't want to lose him, either.

Time to give a rundown of Newcastle United. We were founded in 1892 and have been playing our main rival, Sunderland, in the Tyne-Wear Derby since 1898. Our success is seemingly similar to the Chicago Cubs, having won the First Division (forerunner to the Premier League) four times, but not since 1927. Since then, the only success we've had was winning the 1955 FA Cup. We went through some dark times in the late 2000's and were relegated down a league after the 08-09 season, but were back in the BPL after a one year absence. Since then we've had moderate success and finished right in the middle of the league at 10th last season.
Nothing about this team in terms of uniforms or nicknames are particularly catchy. The main nickname is the Magpies and a secondary nickname is "The toon", which is how the people in that region of England pronounce town. And if you want to dress like a prisoner while playing soccer, these uniforms are just for you.

There is no one particularly interesting on their roster that I'm aware of, however they did just sign Siem De Jong, one of the big bruising center backs that is currently playing for the Netherlands in the WC. Although I think he's out for the rest of the tournament with an injury.
You're actually thinking of Nigel de Jong. Siem de Jong has played for the Dutch before but sparingly and never in a WC. Siem de Jong is also an AM or striker where Nigel is a CDM and one of the best in the world, though a complete tool.

Nigel is the one you're thinking of. Siem de Jong plays for Ajax and is a creative attacker, Nigel is a holder and rock in midfield. Haven't heard that tho, but judging on your info it's Nigel. Newcastle was down last year, but I think they rebound a bit this year and finish in the top half of the table

Okay guys - for each of your efforts: Daily Mail Sports Section. Click on the Crest of your team across the top. It will take you to the team page. The Daily Mail is tabloid like all the UK papers are but not as bad as some. Their sports reporting is decent. Scroll down past the day's stories and you will see tabs for 'Past Hour', 'Today' etc - these links will take you to a variety of pages you can use going forward to track your clubs. Hope it helps.

Excellent for the USA too - no league puts more emphasis on defense than the italians. I can watch highlights of Maldini, Nesta or Cannavaro as easily as EPL goal scoring highlights. Yedlin would thrive there. Learn a ton. Genoa would give him playing time. Great news.

Boom!! Welcome to the party Dawgowar, 6 new players have joined waiting on 14 more for a full draft. You have 16 of 19 odds you won't get a big four or you can dive on a grenade right now. Good news out of Leicester City. Our captain Wes Morgan just signed a contract to stay through 2017. He's been with the team the past 2 seasons and was named the captain last year. Last year, the back line for LCFC was one of the best in the second-tier giving up only 43 goals all season. Three veterans anchor the back line. Morgan has over 500 career caps within the league. I'm looking forward to this coming up seasons for the Foxes. I think we can stay out of the relegation zone.

Boom!! Welcome to the party Dawgowar, 6 new players have joined waiting on 14 more for a full draft. You have 16 of 19 odds you won't get a big four or you can dive on a grenade right now. (Grenade guarantees you it's not a top 4 but it also guarantees you it's a lesser known club). Staying in the draft is more fun though.
Let the dice roll - will take what I get. "Reporting' is a very broad brush....particularly if it involves Man Shitty or the Scousers

Ok so I have a really stupid idea that could turn out to be very fun if I get enough participants. Here goes. It seems like we have a good amount of posters that would like to start following the EPL more and really have no clue which team is their favorite so I will assign you one team randomly through the draw of the hat. Each poster gets one team and your responsibility for your team is to keep up with them for this next season and give at least one post about their week. There are twenty teams in the EPL for this next season. Who wants in? I need 19 more names. These are the teams for this upcoming season.
http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/matchday/league-table.html
Ok so this seems to be popular so far. We are taking names for the second draft. You will have a buddy to root with. I'll keep doing this as many times as demand warrants. 7 owners are currently waiting for 13 others to join for a full 2nd draft.
I am interested also, but I have been an Aston Villa fan for several years and would prefer to root for them instead of being assigned a random team. If that's cool then count me in.

What is the format of this? Are we going to start a new thread for each team? A thread for the whole thing seems like it would get pretty hard to keep up with.
Do you think they'd give us our own subforum so we don't dirty up the main forum? If not, should I set up a new board (I've hosted several boards before)?

My boys are going after Islam Slimani, the best player on the Algerian National Team. He scored twice in the World Cup and is only 26, so he has a bright future ahead. The Hammers are also signed 19 year old phenom Diego Poyet. We got him on a 4 year deal, so he can make his mark on the EPL while wearing the Claret and Blue. To sure up the defense, we went out and snatched up Aaron Cresswell from Ipswich. He's another young, talented guy to keep an eye on.
And here are a few of our chants. Like State fans, you can appreciate the love/hate relationship these guys have with their team.

I think Hummels will stay in Dortmund for one more year and then move to Real, Bayern, or to the EPL with Chelsea, United, or City.

Leicester City is proud to announce that we have resigned David Nugent to a 2-year deal with the club. The 29 year old forward has been with the team for three years and his previous contract expired this summer. He played in all 46 matches last year and scored over 20 goals in that time. He also had 12 assists during the season, enough for third in the championship tier last year. Last year, LCFC was undefeated in games where Nugent scored and only failed to win once. He has previously played in the EPL with Portsmouth and when he was on loan with Burnley. In his EPL career, he has amassed 9 goals in 64 appearances.

I wish we had separate threads for each team, or its own subforum for these updates, but here's the latest on the Arsenal.
- The coach's ****in' name is Arsene.
- We are looking to swoop up 20-year-old Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid.
- We are looking to grab German Sami Khedira from Real Madrid.
- We may let some Egyptian guy come over on trial basis.
So, we have raided the 3 top teams in La Liga in the past week (also Barcelona for Alexis Sanchez). Didn't DudyDawg say La Liga is better?
Yes, I did. And the leading scorer of the EPL just moved to La Liga. La Liga has less money (other than Real Madrid and barca), but more talent in the mid and lower level teams. That's why they've been so dominant in champions and Europa league while English teams have had almost no success

I'm not 61, but the standard answer is "as soon as we get 20 new owners, i.e. 6 more owners." What's that time frame look like? Can't tell you, but it'll likely be before the EPL season starts in mid-August.

People don't want to see the growth even though it's there for whatever reason/insecurity that they have. It will still take some time for the general population of the USA to appreciate and respect soccer as a sport. The World Cup definitely helps and if ESPN would advertise big MLS games then that would help overall too.

Dudy, I gotta disagree with you here. I think at the top La Liga is better, but the BPL is much deeper. For the past 10 years until this one, it has literally been Real Madrid and Barcelona +18 other teams. In that time only Valencia has finished in the top 2 and that was once in 07-08. Also in that time, 5 different EPL teams have finished in the top 2 (Man U, Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea). There were more players from the EPL than any other league in the World cup by a long shot.

I'm not saying that it's a more competitive league, but it is a better one. In the times the la Liga teams play the EPL ones in Europe, they win. Last year alone, the semi finals of the champions league had 3 teams of four from la Liga. The Europa league also had three la Liga teams in the last four. La Liga has a toooon of young talent that moves from the smaller teams to real Madrid and Barcelona and over seas, but while they are at those smaller teams in La Liga, those teams are good. Look at Valencia. They've recently had David silva, jordi alba, and more that are dominating at big clubs. I kind of look at it like inter conference play. La Liga has dominated it lately

Yeah, sadly it looks like my Madridistas will be without angel next year. That means we will bring in James Rodriguez, so that's great, but I will miss Di Maria. He had a huuuuge year for us. Maybe, just maybe, we find a way to hold onto him.

Seattle is a very cool city. My sister lives there. Last year I caught a Seahawks game and a Mariners game and this year I plan on adding the Sounders to the list if possible (might not be though since they play where the Seahawks play at Century Link or the Clink if you wanna sound like a Seattle native). The green you see on the Sounders kits and the Seahawks is the same green that is the color of the Xbox Live symbol that pops up. Reason is because Microsoft is part owner of both franchises.

Haha I am saying I plan my trips up to Seattle paired up with the Seahawks and Mariners so that we can catch them both. It's like a tradition we are trying to do and I don't know if the Sounders will have a home match during the same weekend I go up there. We can just agree to disagree. As I said, the top of La Liga is better than the top of the EPL, and that's exactly the point you just made by stating that 3/4 of the champion's league was La Liga. Only two EPL teams were in the Europa league and both got shafted by their draws. Swansea had to play Napoli (3rd in Seria A) in the round of 32, and Tottenham had to play Benfica in the round of 16 (won Primeira Liga).
Look at all the players from smaller EPL clubs (not the big 5) Lukaku, Howard, Shaw, Lallana, Lovren, Lambert, Jay Rodriguez, Benteke, Ruiz, Altidore, Cameron, De Guzman, Debuchy, Krul, Sissoko. Only two of Spain's national team played in Spain and not for Barcelona or Real Madrid (Koke and Costa both of Atletico).
Like I said, though, we can agree to disagree. Just good discussion.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I mentioned te European games bc it's the only time EPL, Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A, Bundelsiga and more all play, and the Spanish teams have dominated them all as of late. I feel like (my opinion, obviously) if you watch two mid table teams in La Liga play you will see a lot more technical and creative ability on the field than if you watched a comparable one in EPL. Guys like Antioine Griezmann of France, Ivan Rakitic of Sevilla (now Barcelona) played in the World Cup and were HUGELY impactful in it. Can't say the same for a lot of those mid-table-team players in the EPL. Ruiz and Sissoko were maybe the only two.
And yes, great discussion. I love being able to debate this stuff as a massive soccer fan. Don't worry about me taking it personally or anything ha. Just great stuff to debate

Can someone help me with how the Champions League works? From what I read, there's a head to head match up between teams from crappy leagues. Then another head to head matchup between those winners, and the teams from less crappy leagues. Then head to head matchups with those winners and the 4th and 3rd place teams from the top leagues. Then a group stage with those winners, plus the 1st and 2nd place teams from the top league (32 total teams at this point). Then the top two from those groups play in a playoff. All the playoff games and head to head matchups are 2 legs, except the championship game. Is this the gist of it?

Okay, buckle in for those trying learn about Champions League. Heres how it works:
QUALIFICATION: the Champions League (CL) is a tournament (not a league) consisting of 32 teams from Europe's top leagues. Qualification is based on the final standings from each European country's league. Each of these leagues is allotted a certain number of slots, and the teams that finish in them are in the Champions league (top four at the end of the season in the English Premier League get into next year's CL, for example). The number of slots per league are based on how good that league is/how much money it has/etc.
DRAW: Each of the 32 teams are put into certain pots, based on how they finished last year and what league they are in. These pots are drawn, and eight groups of four teams are created. Teams from the same country cannot be in the same CL group.
GROUP STAGE: Each team in each group plays six games, one home and one away against each team in their group. Two advance from this group, based on the points system (just like world cup). The team that comes in third in these groups is sent to the Europa League, which is basically the NIT of European Club soccer.
KNOCKOUT ROUNDS (Round of 16): The top two teams from each group are then placed into another pot, separating the group winners and second place teams. The teams that won the group play a second place team. These two teams then play a home and home with each other, and who advances is based on goal differential. If the goal differential is the same, the team who scored more away goals advances. If both goal differential and away goals are the same, the second game (called the second leg) goes into extra time and penal ties if needed, just like the World Cup.
QUARTER AND SEMI-FINALS: The teams are put into one big pot and redrawn again. The two teams drawn play each other in a home and home, with the exact format as the round of 16 games.
FINALS: The final is held at a neutral European site in late May, and it is a one game winner take all game.
Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, I'm here. Here's some perspective of the size of this. In 2011, the Superbowl had 111.3 million viewers. The Champions League final that year surpassed 300 million

I just want to point out that DudyDawg has described the UEFA Champions League. There's also a CONCACAF (USA/Mexico) Champions League which starts next month. It will have 5 MLS teams (4 U.S./1 Canada) and 4 Mexican teams. It's been pretty much dominated by Mexico recently. Real Salt Lake made the finals in 2010-2011, but Mexican sides have won every year since 2006 and only 2 non-Mexican sides have made the finals in that time.

it also features teams from Costa Rica, Honduras and more. Thats the next big step for MLS to take as far as getting respect in our region and globally. If we can start winning it every two years, consistently getting teams in the semifinals and finals, it will help the league get attention outside of the US and Canada.

So what was decided on the draft- is it for second ownership of the same teams, or a different league, or what?

I believe second ownership of the same teams.
Are we picking or are you assigning?
I'm excited for this. I just hope that I don't get one of the ones with a really dumb name.
I'm looking at you, Burnley, Everton, QPR, and Spurs.
I'd still take em. Those are just silly.

2nd owners of same 20 teams. Just keeping it EPL this year. It's fine to comment on other leagues I am just not going to assign that to any posters.

Really pumped for this! For those like me that know little to nothing about professional soccer, I compiled a list of frequently used terms and rules with their definitions. It's a little long and may be excessive, so deal with it! This will help us understand what those crooked teeth Brits are talking about once the season rolls around.
BOX: The box means the penalty area. Sometimes called the 18-yard box, to distinguish it from the goal area, which is the 6-yard box (for those with a metric turn of mind, the corresponding measurements are 16.5 meters and 5.5 meters).
CAP: This isn’t a type of hat. In soccer, a cap is the term used to describe how many international matches a player has partaken in.
CARDS: The referee holds two cards in his pocket — one yellow and one red — which are used to indicate a serious foul has been committed. If a players is given a card, it is said that he’s been “booked.”
CLEAR: This is a way to describe a kick or head bump to the ball that knocks it, or clears it, away from the goal area.
CORNER KICK: If a ball is sent out of bounds by a defender on the end line around the goal, the attacking team gets to kick it in from the closest corner of the pitch.
FREE KICK: A player is awarded this when his opponent engages with him in a particularly careless or reckless manner. The kick can be described as either direct, where the player can pass or kick on the goal from the spot of the foul, or indirect, a kick which is awarded to a team if the opposing goalie commits a foul in his own penalty area.
GOAL: Don’t ever say “points.” If a game is 3-2, it’s three goals to two.
KIT: A player’s uniform.
MATCH: This is the preferred way to refer to a soccer game.
NIL: There are no zeroes in soccer. When the score is 1-0, you don’t say “one to zero,” it’s “one-nil.”
OFFSIDE: You will hear this one a lot. It’s called when a player is closer to the opponent’s goal than the ball or the penultimate defender.
RED CARD: If a player is given a red card by the referee, he is automatically ejected from the game. Violations include: violence, spitting, deliberately touching the ball with your hands if you’re not a goalie, overly dangerous plays, flagrantly fouling an opponent to prevent an inevitable goal, offensive or insulting language or gestures or receiving two yellow cards in one game.
PENALTY: Beware! The word "penalty" has a very specific (and very dramatic) meaning in soccer. It should be applied only to the award of a penalty kick -- i.e., the 12-yard direct free kick taken from the penalty spot with only the goalkeeper to beat. It should never be used in connection with any other offense or free kick situation.
PITCH: AKA Field. Soccer fields are by no means all the same size. International rules allow substantial variation, but the length (from 100 to 130 yards) must always be greater than the width (50 to 100 yards). Excessively narrow fields are a problem in the USA. Many soccer fields are modified football fields, whose playing width of just over 53 yards can rarely be sufficiently enlarged to give the minimum 70 yards that a satisfactory soccer field needs.
PROMOTION and RELEGATION: Soccer leagues throughout the world usually feature a number of divisions. The weakest clubs are in the lower Divisions, the strongest in the top Division. The composition of the Divisions changes each season. The top clubs in each lower division (usually the first three or four) are promoted to the division above, whose bottom three or four clubs are relegated (demoted) to replace them. Thus each division features two competitions: one at the top to decide the championship and promotion places, the other at the bottom to avoid relegation.
SCORELINES: The convention used throughout the soccer world is to name the home team first. Thus, a scoreline of AC Milan 3 Lazio 2, tells you not only that Milan won the game, but also that the game was played in Milan. A scoreline of AC Milan 0 Lazio 1 indicates an away win for Lazio at Milan.
STOPPAGE TIME: This is extra time slapped onto the end of the each 45-minutes half as deemed appropriate by the referee. Since soccer is played in uninterrupted intervals, the stoppage time accounts for the delays that happen due to injuries, substitution or other scenarios the referee sees fit.
TACKLE: To use the feet in attempting to take the ball from an opponent's feet. A tackle may be accompanied by a legitimate shoulder charge, but there must be no holding, pushing, tripping, elbowing, or hip-checking. Clean tackling -- the ability to strip the ball from an opponent without fouling -- requires considerable skill. Unfortunately, the leniency shown to defenders has meant that many defenders are not good tacklers. They simply clatter into the guy with the ball, often from behind, and -- if called for a foul-- protest, "But I got the ball ref!" Possibly, but only by demolishing the opponent as well. FIFA's claim that its rule changes have banished the more violent tackles from behind is questionable - such tackles are still frequently seen.
TOUCH LINE: This is a synonym for sideline.
TRANSFER FEE: When a player under contract to a club is traded (transferred) to another club, the new club has to purchase the contract, often paying huge sums of money for it. This is the transfer fee -- it goes to the selling club, not to the player.
YELLOW CARD: This card is doled out as a formal caution. If a player racks up two during a single game, he will be ejected. Yellow card fouls include unsportsmanlike conduct (including dives!), dissent by words or actions, persistent breakage of the roles, delaying the start or restart of a play, defending a corner kick, free kick or throw-in too closely, and entering or leaving the field without the referee’s permission.
