This is interesting because I am starting to agree. Dan has looked around for a new job at different times &, when he was hired at MSU, he stated that no coach should ever stay somewhere for 10+ years. So it would be interesting to hear his opinion on staying at MSU long term.

Problem for Dan is that unless a few schools come calling for him, no one else can afford him. If we win 7+ games this year & I'm stricklin, I lock him up for 5 mil a year & make him even more untouchable. Maybe he's our Coach K.

Here are the schools we should worry about taking Dan.

    1. Notre Dame - No doubt this is his dream job & he's a perfect fit. Problem for Dan is that Brian Kelly is a really really good coach & not leaving.
    2. Texas - Charlie Strong is on the hot seat, but I don't see Texas hiring Mullen if Strong is fired. My guess is they want sexy. Probably an NFL guy or Kiffin.
    3. USC - Intriguing.....USC has a new coach & he'll get at least 2-3 years & they'd want SEXY if they fired him.
    4. Ohio State - Perfect fit, but, unless Urban has another heart attack, they won't be needing a new coach anytime soon.
    5. Florida State - If Jimbo leaves for LSU at some point, they may be mildly intrigued. The offense doesn't really work there though.
    6. Texas A&M - If A&M lets Sumlin go, I could see them being midley interesting. Would probably want something more sexy.
    7. Auburn - If Auburn let's Malzahn go, I could actually see them coming after Mullen because he beats their ass every year. Not sure he'd leave us for Auburn
    8. Tennessee - If Butch doesn't have a great year, things could go downhill. Tennessee would be interesting.
    9. Penn State - See Tennessee
    10. Michigan - Harbaugh would have to go to the NFL & they'd probably just hire his protege instead of changing the offense.
    11. Georgia - Smart just got there.
    12. UCLA - Mora with the new QB is set.
    13. LSU - They want Jimbo or Saban 2.0

That's all I've got. There are 13 schools that I believe could steal Mullen from us, &, of those, only a few even a chance of coming open soon.

Just to add to what is already a good list of what many like about Mullen, and this story should also make you proud of this university as a whole, when Keith Joseph and his dad were killed last year, his roommate was back home for the break. The first call he received about it was from Dan and how he could help him. Dan also called this players parents immediately afterwards to ask what he could to do to help them help him get through this. Megan came down to spend time with him and his family. Every coach and assistant called to check on him and his family. President Keenum called him personally. Teachers, tutors, assitants, etc. called him to ask what they could do to help. The mom has stated that she knows without a doubt that this was absolutely the best choice he could have made to further his education and career. That the coaches and university prove "this is a family" motto by their actions. She loves this school and what it stands for. And all of this was done without thought of it ever being known to the public or media. It was just what family does for each other.

I think Dan's "flirtation" with leaving last year was a) to test the waters; b) completely blown out of proportion by Bear-controlled sites and our own chicken littles with agendas; and c) Dan's frustration on dealing with wanting to stay above the recruiting fray while having UNM pulling all their crap constantly. THAT has to be incredibly frustrating to put in work and have the Bears throwing cars, houses, and cash like they do.

But, I think all of it led to Scott - and Kennum- realizing we had to have more off field support to counteract that and keep Dan happy and keep the program moving forward without "heppin" being the answer.

I think that was a lot of what motivated Mullen to look around last year. If the NCAA hammers OM, that should even the playing field somewhat on the recruiting trail. I say somewhat because I doubt they will totally pull in their horns.

He has done very well in my opinion on the recruiting trail selling our university and program. Really the only position we have struggles at was on the O-line and we seem to be shoring that up this cycle. If we can ever get a competent line we could seriously compete for a championship. Even in 14 we didn't have a great O line but they were more than serviceable and held their own against everyone we played. We are so close to having a complete team and from the looks of it we will have competent QB play for the foreseeable future and that can offset some deficiencies on the line as long as they are just average.

Showing my age, but needs to get us to Atlanta, then I might lead the charge for a statue of Dan b4 Jackie. I sure wish the wheels hadn't fallen off during Jackie's last three years. Both made me see we could win and proud to be a Bulldog.

The elephant in the room is the terrible o-line and OL recruiting. And the fact that Hevesy is the golden goose that can do no wrong in Dan's eyes.

That said, Dan is a master with QBs and offense and that is his saving grace.
