It's because of the roster rules. If you are on scholarship you have to count towards the 35 man roster. I believe 27 have to be on some form of scholarship so we can only carry 8 walk-ons. So if you cut someone on scholarship you essentially lose a roster spot.
Just another reason college coaches hate the NCAA rules in baseball.
Not to belabor the point but I guess I'm curious now, did we actually have 8 walk-ons on the roster this year? If so, we had 8 walk-ons that got spots ahead of Reynolds? Does a guy on an academic scholarship or some other non-athletic aid still count as a walk-on?
