The fact that we have diehard basketball fans who think making the round of 68 and then losing the first game, usually because they can?t defend the 3 or throw it in the ocean on offense, baffles me. Just making the tourney out of 330 D1 programs, 250 of which have no business playing at that level is also baffling.

I really didn't think this needed to be explained on a message board or supposed fanatics, but here goes...
Of the 68 qualifiers, 31 are automatic for conf tournament winners, so...
In the sec, you have 16 teams competing for 38 spots.
In the acc, you have 16 teams competing for 38 spots.
In the big 12, you have 16 teams competing for 38 spots.
In the big 10, you have 18 teams competing for 38 spots.
In the big east, you have 11 teams competing for 38 spots.
So in just the major conferences, take out the one qualifier from each, and you have 72 teams competing for 33 spots.
These 33 spots are of course being competed for my other schools like Gonzaga/st Mary's (one will be auto), Utah st/sdsu/NM (one will be auto), VCU/dayton/st Louis (one will be auto). Making the tourney isn't the great achievement of all time, but it is light years harder than making a bowl in football.

But winning a Bowl Game, no matter the level, should mean a lot more to fans of a school like MSU, than losing a play in or 1st Round Basketball Game.
But, I do see your points.

Maybe 5 years ago. When is the last time a college basketball player opted out of a NCAAT game?

Back to the portal... it closes on Tuesday, so the action should be picking up from today on.

Getting to the NCAA tournament is way more exciting than making a pointless bowl game outside the 12 team playoff. It gives you an opportunity to play for a national championship. I wish they would just eliminate the bowl games and expand the playoff to 16. At the same time I get your point about making it and then losing which is what Jans has done. Personally, I would rather miss the tournament a couple years and then every few years have a team that gets there and makes noise like Richard Williams did.

We made the bowl last year with 5 pitiful wins, 1 SEC win over an inept Arkansas team on a last-second TD pass, and we received the bid after others turned it down. We also looked unprepared in the bowl game. No excitement for me in another losing season, which should have been a winning season if not for bone-headed decisions by our latest on-the-job training HC in games against TN, FL & TX. Excitement for me, no, just growing apathy. JMO.

Possibly hit a homerun with RJ Johnson. Also checks all the boxes.
