Then why didn't he just step down after 2016? We were going through fall practice when he became AD. If he didn't intend to coach in 2017 he should have just stepped down after the Arizona SR.

Look at Tennessee and what they had to hire because of the timing of Vitello leaving. And who we had to hire- a hitting coach from LSU. The fall is an awful time to try to hire a coach.
