I assume all players get a chance to show out at practice. So that is a player's opportunity. Again, it is competitive environment. Life can be dog-eat-dog. I have no issue kicking any player to the curb if we can find someone better. I'm not a "participation ribbon" type of guy. I hope we recruit over every player on our roster. I absolutely love Fluff Boutwell for instance. But if the next version of Barry Sanders is available, Fluff will be watching from the sidelines with his helmet in his hand. It's a bit more complicated with boosters paying money now. They want to see ROI on their investment. For example they clearly had their better QB on the bench to start the year and it took injuries for him to get into the game. They love the portal and they do not take players without the intent of them starting. As a result it does not allow for much development for a high school player.
