Im.for a 16 team playoff with no byes. No other NCAA playoff that Im aware of has byes. And you can play a 16 team playoff in the same number of weeks as a 12 team playoff.

FCS, DII and DIII all have byes in football.

So does basketball. 60 teams get a bye into the round of 64, with the other 8 playing in First Four for the other 4 spots.

My reference was to all other NCAA D1 tournaments (basketball, baseball, softball, etc.) so I should have been more specific. I don't really keep up with the lower division playoffs. The byes must be fairly recent though because the old D1-AA (FCS) used to be a straight 16 team playoff in football.

ETA: The other question though is if you go beyond 16 teams that will add another 1 or 2 weeks to the playoffs. Before long, by the time college football ends it will be on the verge of March Madness.

That?s me. I would prefer 16 teams. No byes. All games on campus until the championship game. And no more conference championship games.

I just don't see why we can't have both a playoff AND bowls. Because the reality is there are still college students involved and when you have a playoff that goes beyond four weeks it gets harder and harder to squeeze it all in during a semester. It's already going almost to MLK day as it is now. So, then you're going to be forced with telling schools to cut a couple of regular season games and that would be pretty bad for pretty much everyone in addition to the conference playoff games. And with the majority of colleges being in towns like Starkville and Oxford that need the business during football season that's not going to fly.
Enjoy your posts, but unless you are playing in a New Year's Day type bowl and can pay big bucks to retain the majority of your best players, lower level bowls today have absolutely no bearing on how your team may look the next year in this portal free for all. JMO.

I didn't say it had a bearing on it. I'm saying that fans want to see the team play so they can form their own opinion on it. Even with the portal for example- fans can watch a bowl game and form opinions on future needs from the portal.

Hell no, but since the idea is absurd on general principle, it'll probably happen.
