He left to avoid the show cause and your example is a poor one. Top SEC coaches make more than 2/3 of the NFL head coaches. I'd much rather be the HC at Bama or Georgia than coach the Saints or Browns- regardless of salary
But he's not coaching the Saints or Browns, he took a plum job with loaded team, good QB, went 11-6 and made the playoffs. Every college coach would take the Chargers over any CFB job.
