I always thought that San Diego kind of stunted his growth because they couldn't figure out what to do with him. He would've benefited from a Rooker type situation where a struggling team picks him up and gives him 300 ABs and just lets him work through learning how to be an effective hitter at the MLB level.
He did have a few solid years. He went through a five year stretch (17,18, 19, 21, and 22 - I disregarded the 2020 short covid season) where he hit .243 with 145 homers. That's a damn good five year run in today's baseball.
