    Bo Bounds on Hutzler

Bo seems very confident that Hutz is demoted and Barnes is made DC by this afternoon.

I wonder if he's been told something. He was pretty certain it happens sometime today.

    We shall see.

Would not shock me one bit. Bo generally does not throw out absolutes unless he has been told something pretty credible.

Weird how Barnes wasn't the DC from the start. He actually has experience.

Yeah that's not something he would just throw out there without some kind of legit reason.

He wasn't good at Memphis. And I think that they were hoping Hutzler would be a placeholder until we can maybe get Durkin.

If they're going to make a change it needs to be now with UMass this weekend. Because we don't need to go in with a new guy against a SEC team.

I've seen his name thrown around a lot and has been for years. There any interested there from his side?

Don’t think it matters one way or another at this point. The fact our AD and boosters okayed the Hutzler hire is the primary issue and is why we keep getting the same results regardless of coach. It’s unfortunate but our “money” boosters don’t have the finances or football acumen to make good choices for our program. Oh well.

I will repeat that Hutzler isn't the biggest issue with the defense, but if we are going to make changes on the defensive staff, then Jeff should consider going with the Flyover defense that was basically created to allow programs in areas that don't have fertile recruiting grounds to be able to defend the Leach and Briles systems in the Big 12. It's a defend the pass first scheme, and it's becoming more and more prevalent as teams realize that passing the football is the key to winning.

He's kind of the new age Todd Grantham. He's on his 4th SEC school and doesn't really stay long at any of the stops. He has obvious connections to Lebby as they were coordinators for Lane at the same time. We had discussions with him from the moment Lebby was hired but A&M did not want to let him go before Elko had a staff in place. They had a bunch of people wanting Elko to keep him and A&M wasn't going to buy him out of his contract and just let him go.

We need to find a coordinator that can do more with less. Durkin fits that mold.

Does he really though? His first OM defense was as bad as ours is for similar reasons. He did have a massive improvement in year two which got him his ticket out of Oxford.

Jon Heacock at Iowa State is making right at $1 million a year to be their defensive coordinator. Throw him some money to see if he wants to bring the Flyover defense to the SEC.

It was as bad but they were more opportunistic with takeaways. That has been my main gripe with us. If we are going to suck, at least take chances. We looked to have turned it around a bit but Saturday was back to the same ole thing. We were not close enough to receivers to take chances. Their defense also improved dramatically in 21.

    Precisely.

It's not Durkin's fault that Hugh's offense royally sucks. That offense has put his defense in some bad situations.

Well Auburn also has 100x the talent we do on defense. They have multiple starters that could actually start at other P5 schools. We have multiple starters that would have trouble contributing at EMCC and NWCC on Thursday nights.

The point I was making with Durkin was that we have seen what he can do with no talent on Defense. He at least makes them opportunistic. They may get gashed between the 20s but 1 in 5 times they'll get a pick.

Also I will just throw this name out there, Pete Golding. If Kiffin leaves, which is a definite possibility, I do not see a situation where OM promotes Golding. We also may be able to get Kane Wommack on the cheap.

Kane Wommack is struggling with Alabama level talent on defense. He's not one that I would want, particularly at the talent deficit we are currently at.

With Mack Brown looking to be out at North Carolina after the season, this could open up Geoff Collins (and Randy Clement for the OL).

Yeah, I was conflating to things, agreement with you and an argument for why some people are down on Durkin's defense at AU.

But, experience counts. An experienced DC with a decent track record and we might be 3-5 right now.
