If he has real offers, it counts against 85, right?

So what keeps Bama from having a bunch of walk ons every year? If this were the case, i think blue bloods would be getting a ton of "walk ons"

Really? They case sign whatever they want they don't have to play this game, we on the other hand do. If the players are not on grant and aid they don't count against they 85 number. That number is like 11.7 in baseball.

Seems to me the chances are better of working your way up the depth chart at someplace other than Bama, Clemson and other blue bloods. Ain't that what most of the kids who walk on are looking for? Competing against all 4 and 5* guys vs 3 and 4* guys is a no brainer if I want to play as early as possible.

You aren't following me. I'm saying if you can get guys to walk on with legit offers without it counting against 85, you'd have 3-stars "walking on" at the blue bloods. I thought they cut that out
ETA... Bama signs their 25 this fall, and then talk 8 kids into walking on

Ok ... so I don't really know how a PWO works. Care to 'splain? Do they get some kind of financial assistance? How the rules work?

If you are not providing someone with a scholarship then they do not count against your 85. It does not matter what someone else offered them. No one is walking on at Alabama when they have legit offers to other P5 schools unless they are extremely wealthy or just grew up a huge Alabama fan. That would raise serious eyebrows with the NCAA. Most people are not going to willingly put themselves in hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt just to ride the pine at Alabama when they have a free ride elsewhere.

So arch manning could go to OM as a walk on and allow OM to have another scholarship?

Yes, you have it figured out now.

Sure. It happens in baseball a lot. Coaches ask players that can afford it to take less of a scholarship in order to help out guys that don't come from as much. If Arch Manning has that much talent and is hell bent on going to OM it could be an option I suppose, but I don't see that happening. Matt Luke went to OM as a walk-on when he had other options for that reason when OM had recruiting sanctions.

I'm thinking like Jarius does above. But on the flip side with someone like Arch Manning ... yea Archie might consider sending him to OM without a scholly. Not sure how the NCAA could create a rule against that tho they may have one.
PWO in that case for good athletes whose families are pretty damn well off.

There are also a lot of other rules with walk-ons. I believe only so many of them can work out with the team and use the S&C staff in summer and I think only like 105-110 players can report to fall camp before school. The other walk-ons can't report until after school starts for football as well. So walk-ons are at a big disadvantage and schools are going to want to make sure that all of their best players report to camp. That's probably one reason why you don't see very many walk-ons playing in the SEC.
So if you walk-on you can't get any other academic aid unless you are a blue shirt meaning you weren't recruited by the school you are going to which is very different than baseball. So you're paying your own way, have to get a private S&C coach to hope to have a chance to hang with the practice quad, and you have to show up to camp later than everyone else.
Someone like Arch Manning could easily pay their way at Ole Miss but the catch there is if you walk-on the NCAA won't let them announce them as part of their recruiting class which would hurt them in the rankings and we all know how much Ole Miss loves those. They're going to want the splash of getting him. And that's another reason why a lot of guys won't walk-on in general. They won't get "their day" to announce and be part of a signing class like the rest of their friends.
Not to mention less incentive for Alabama to not process you if you are a walk-on. APR and things like that factor in.

That may happen when this pay for likeness stuff comes into play. Walk-on to Bama and we will have autograph sessions to get your scholarship paid for.
