Both celebrity and politicians can sue for libel or slander. They have to prove it was false and made them with actual malice or was negligent in saying or writing them. Politicians don't sue because they all engage in the practice but other public figures and celebrities sue all the time and win.
I'll be shocked if he wins.. you are probably right that he will settle with WorldStar. He isn't going to get anything from Barstool except for laughter.
