Messing up is different than negligence or incompetence. We are all human. We all make mistakes. These refs didn't "miss a call". They stood there, saw the obvious and clear call, then committed gross negligence that should not be tolerated. If someone sees 2+2 and just doesn't realize it equals 4, then they shouldn't be a math teacher making $189,000 a year.
I'm sure these refs are nice people, but some things can't be tolerated. There is a line and they crossed it.
