24 or 28 team playoff coming?
I'm for it. I think we could reasonably expect to get into the top 7 of the SEC several times per decade. Eventually, I think the playoff winds up at 32 teams, so let's not wait until after we finish in the top 32.

Another positive is that this likely kills off the bowl games, which have turned into scams that few players or teams even care about anymore.

Ugh no thank you. Making a playoff every so often is not that big a deal if there are 28 teams in it. And that allocation for the SEC and ACC is seriously off. Only 1/4 of the teams are SEC? And 5 ACC?!

It's a bigger deal to sometimes make a 28-team bracket than never make a 12-team bracket, isn't it?
In my lifetime, we would have made the 12-team bracket once, 2014. Not even 1999. We would have made it in this 28-team model 6 or 7 times, maybe a couple of others depending on how the autobids shake out.

Actually in 1999 we would have made it.
And why do you want to kill off bowls? Do you want to watch less football? I don't think they're going anywhere because of the money ESPN has tied up in them.
And good luck getting the SEC to give up their championship game.

In my opinion? No. Not unless we have a chance of competing like we would if we were one of the top 12.
If they expanded it to 50 and we made it, would that matter?

Fans want to watch more meaningful football is all.

Becoming the nba. Regular season is to see what 4 teams don't make the playoffs.

This. I couldn’t care less about watching the Weedwacker bowl even if we’re in it.

DII is going to 32 this year.
FCS has 24.
Im all for it. Kill the bowls. Play a couple of rounds in campuses, and the semis and finals at neutral sites

In 1999, we weren't ranked at all in the final BCS rankings. We were #15 in the AP poll after the conference championship games. We wouldn't have been close to making it in the current 12-team format.

The 32-team playoff gives 31 postseason games, which is just a couple fewer than the current bowl format, and all 31 would be both teams trying to win with full rosters, in 100% meaningful games. I think that's a great tradeoff.

Yeah, I agree that it seems unlikely, but the article says the Big Ten is considering is at part of the 24/28 team model.

There are 136 fbs teams.
So 28 would mean 20% of teams make the playoff.

Well below any of the professional leagues

Haven't been to a bowl game since the Music City bowl in Nashville against Wake Forest. Friend ordered tickets through Bulldog Club and got Bob Ueker seats on the next to the last row, but it was easy to move down and take your choice of about 20K empty seats. Very cold and wind was vicious. Bowls mean nothing now unless you are in the playoffs. The extra practice time means little due to the portal, as no time to develop young players anymore. JMO.

By the same analysis people want to be in the field of 64 in basketball.

Of course people want to be in vs. not be in. I am saying I prefer a smaller playoff even if we have a worse chance of making it. Expanding it waters down the product, just as expanding the NCAA field would.

Does it though? The 14 vs. 19 game is going to be better than almost any "bowl game" even if it's really unlikely that either team will go on to win the championship, because both teams would have full rosters who desperately want to win.

It waters down the playoff but most of all the regular season - this is my point. I do not care to compare it to bowl games, otherwise you might as well put every team in a playoff.
-
Definitely against 32 teams. With 32, you are going to have a couple of 7-5 teams make the playoffs. 👎

Bowl games are extremely popular. I don't see them going anywhere. Because there are always going to be fans that want to see the team play football no matter what because they want to see what the team will look like next year. I think the opt out thing will be remedied eventually with NIL. If you pay these players enough- they will play. Even if it's the McAlister's Bowl in Jackson it's going to be meaningful to someone.
I just don't see why we can't have both a playoff AND bowls. Because the reality is there are still college students involved and when you have a playoff that goes beyond four weeks it gets harder and harder to squeeze it all in during a semester. It's already going almost to MLK day as it is now. So, then you're going to be forced with telling schools to cut a couple of regular season games and that would be pretty bad for pretty much everyone in addition to the conference playoff games. And with the majority of colleges being in towns like Starkville and Oxford that need the business during football season that's not going to fly.
