have fun Aubies.
I love how the auburn 247 mods wrote articles during the last search , about Cohen having a 50 point check list, how thorough a process he is running.......and then he hires Freeze. I saw social media asking them where on the 50 point list was "hookers....check"
The problem with Cohen, and it was the same problem he had here except he had more autonomy here, HE HAS TO BE the smartest person in the room. Auburn lets him do all that stuff and then kicks him out of the room when the decision is made and tells him who to hire.
Auburn will end up with the choice of whatever group of boosters turn it is to hire the coach this time. I think this time it's the faction opposite Rane. That used to be led by Bobby Lowder but he's not involved anymore so I don't know who leads that faction now.
Where does Auburn rank in Jobs?
Assuming LSU does not have something else going on.
(1) LSU
(2) Penn State
(3) Florida
(4) UCLA (rank assuming they will go crazy with Big 10 money and move to SoFi)
(5) Auburn
(6) Clemson (assuming Dabo is fried)
(7) North Carolina (assuming Belichik is done, they owe him 50M to fire now)
(8) Arkansas
(9) Colorado (assuming Dieon is done)
(10) Virginia Tech
(11) Tulane (Assuming they are losing Sumrall)
(12) Oklahoma State
(13) Oregon State
(14) Colorado State
If Ole Miss loses LK, wonder where they rank in this feeding frenzy
I saw somewhere that had Mullen as Auburn's top target and I'm thinking no way in Hades does Cohen go after Mullen (lol). That relationship obviously discredited the reporter's insight (hence why I didn't remember where I saw it).
My last 3 would be Colorado Ore State and Col State.
And errybody said AAAAAAMEN!!!
Glad Jerry Jones isn't incharge of our coaching search.
Cohen looks like he's a hostage forced to speak.
Cohen should have stayed a baseball coach. He has always been in way over his head as an AD. I am still shocked Auburn hired him, but I am thankful they took him off our hands. I think Auburn is going to have trouble finding a coach this time around with all the other big name openings.
Cohen was tired of coaching baseball. He had already determined in 15 that 16 would be his last season. That is why Scott initially gave him that Assc. AD title. Hell I still remember he held a press conference in like June of 15 and there were some rumblings that he may be stepping down at that time. Then once Stricklin left he set his sights on the AD job and got to politicking his baseball boosters. Had he not gotten the AD job he still would not have coached us in 17. He had the Bama baseball job in his back pocket at that time as well. He knew he could take a year or two off and get the Bama job when he wanted it.
IB is a douche but let's not act like his hires here were all bad. Lemonis won a damn natty at the end of the day. Leach and Jans were strong.
There is so much more than just who the AD hired to doing the job. Hiring coaches is never just the AD anyway. Running the department and leading a large organization are the major part and he was a disaster. He single handedly put our entire department behind with NIL. And that is just the beginning, he will go down as the worst AD since Dudy Noble at MSU and that is saying a mouth full.
Then why didn't he just step down after 2016? We were going through fall practice when he became AD. If he didn't intend to coach in 2017 he should have just stepped down after the Arizona SR.
Look at Tennessee and what they had to hire because of the timing of Vitello leaving. And who we had to hire- a hitting coach from LSU. The fall is an awful time to try to hire a coach.
To this day I do not understand why Cohen wanted to be an AD. He was a good baseball coach and that's what he knows. That's part of the reason why our baseball program stood out over the other programs when he was our AD. And it's part of the reason why Auburn's baseball program has improved. It's just what he knows. The rest he learned from Larry Templeton and Scott Stricklin and it showed.
He look like a sleep deprived hostage in the presser video that I saw. No way he is in charge.
This is where I'm a firm believer of things happening for a reason. If we had hired Schlossnagle, we might have won a natty during that run. However, Schlossnagle would have jumped at the Texas A&M job opening or Texas job as soon as they opened leaving us to hire another coach and then we would be currently with that coach instead of BOC. The timing for everything worked out with Lemonis in my opinion.
Simple answer: The paycheck. He also was still not 100% sure Scott would take the Florida job. That did not come to fruition until August or September. He also did not need to tip everyone off to that is what he was planning to do. Stricklin was always going to take a better AD job because his goal has always been to be the commissioner of the SEC. Cohen knew that. He knew he could bide his time and get the AD job. People keep acting like Cohen is some brain dead idiot when it comes to this stuff, he is not. He is extremely calculated. He always knew he would have the support of the baseball faction of the boosters so he always had an inside track.
If you read some of the AU message boards they think they won the AD lottery with Cohen. They can't believe we "let him go".
