I agree with you 100%. People forget the Foxhall was great when he got here then regressed annually. Auburn is much improved with Foxhall now. Same with Parker - he came in here as a top tier pitching coach and instantly turned our pitching around. This year hasn't been as good and that's where we seem to have a common denominator who is no longer leading the program. If we were looking at Parker back in 2023 before he was here, we would all think differently.
And those fans that think that Parker should get a chance need to ask themselves- what has Parker done that Lemonis wouldn't have so far?
Beat Memphis? Not sure that Lemonis ever lost to them. If he did it wasn't often.
Beat Kentucky? I think we win that series with Lemonis but probably don't sweep because for that one weekend we managed the staff better than usual.
Beat Ole Miss? Lemonis did that routinely. This weekend probably wouldn't have been much different honestly. It's not like we were noticeably less sloppy. Even the one year Lemonis lost the series to them- which I believe was when Loo got hurt early in his start after we ran through our bullpen- Lemonis still won the Governor's Cup and then ended their season with the Auger/Hujsack game to go 3-2 on the year.
If it comes down to State falling so far down in the baseball world as to having to hire a "fallback" guy, go ahead and put a padlock on the gates. That facility will make a nice amphitheater for future outdoor concerts.
IF State IS who we THINK they are and whom many SAY they are in Baseball, the next Head Coach should have one if the Top Pedigrees in the country OR be one of the Top 3 Rising Stars in College Baseball Coaching Circles!
Parker doesn't fit that any more than Lemonis did! Nor does Burroughs, Mingione, or any number of lower level somewhat successful head coaches. The Delta State HC is successful this year. The William Carey HC is successful this year. Or we interviewing them? Not likely. Don't lower our standards now just because Cohen did!
The game changer is that keeping up with Football and Basketball is killing the all the other Conferences that are not the SEC. Big Issue: The SEC is scholarship'n 34 baseball players. The overall SEC does not have the Olimpic sports or Men's Soccer, Lacrosse, Hockey, Wrestling, and Swimming and Diving to constrain athletic budget allocation for baseball. Also, the SEC does not have intercontinental travel like the Big 10 and Big XII. Those guys have to fly volleyball, Golf, Tennis and WBB teams all over the nation.
The ACC might get 15 to 20. The other conferences will continue with the 11.7 players. This is going to kill off East Carolina, SoCon, many ACC, and many BIG XII programs. The BIG 10 does not lack in money for scholarships but lacks for baseball NIL, coach salary, fan interest, and facilities. The SEC schools are offering parents a huge value. Elite baseball, high MLB visibility, Education that can take you anywhere, and a full scholarship.
So Walters, Bakich, O'Conner, MacDonnell, Ostrander, Saarloos, Canham (Oregon State), and Godwin are on sinking competitive ships. They are looking at 12 SEC schools that can viably win national championships. About 3/4 of the 12 schools have a solid coaching situation. LSU, UGA, UF, Tenn, Vandy, Texas, Ark, and Aub. There only a few championship schools left for a new guy to earn.
These experienced coaches will be fighting to stay in the top-20 while the SEC is going to own the top-10. Plus they have young buck assistant coaches like Elander, Coggins, Weiner, Cain, Thompson, etc that may snake the remaining good jobs.
The abortion that was leaving Pico in Friday and the relievers Saturday were enough for me to put the dagger in having Parker as the HC.
Plus, our pitching has been poor overall this year.
If he is the HC I will be disappointed.
Tell me you don’t understand baseball without saying it. He did exactly the right thing leaving him out there. We didn’t burn anymore arms than necessary and we weren’t exactly wearing Elliot out. We saved our arms for the next two games we had to have. Bianco made the mistake of using his closer for no reason and lost him for the rest of the series. That said Parker ain’t the guy. If he is this is a wreck.
I'm feeling good when Bo Bounds is throwing out distraction names & coaches are denying interest. We're getting a good coach!
That's why you have to play to win in the moment and figure out the rest later. We make it harder on ourselves because we aren't willing to let guy pitch more than once a series usually although that has gotten better under Parker. We still barely pitched McPherson.
According to Rosebowl ( he’s a little pissed at me cause I called his bullshit out on X) If O’Connor does comes to Starkville , he will bring his guys with him and Virginia will hire within. Maybe I am looking too much into it but I think that statement is at least saying that O’Conner is interested. How does that word get out? I guess Virginia could always had a plan if O’Connor leaves but the timing is crazy.
Virginia would likely hire McMullen to be their head coach if O'Connor leaves. Kevin McMullen is Virginia's hitting coach.
O'Connor has had issues with Virginia for awhile and almost ended up at A&M had they not hired from within. Agents usually put stuff out and that's how word gets around.
It seems like there is smoke in several places regarding our job right now. I don't think anyone or anything is completely off the table at this point.
