    Wild, Wild West

Even before the NIL, we have had several posts on how little we traditionally spend on recruiting. They?re saying A&M spent and secured their class with 30 million dollars. If the NIL goes this way, we- us and OM- can find ourselves in the basement. How do smaller market teams compete in this new world in which we find ourselves?

Who is "they". Is this a credible report or message board rumors?
"After dealing with Ole Miss for over a year," he said, "I've learned to expect their leadership to do and say things that the leadership at other Division I schools would never consider doing and to justify their actions by reminding themselves that "We're Ole Miss.""

No idea who "they" is, but take a look at their class. They have 5 of the top 20 players. They have 15 of the top 50. They're the favorite to add another top 10 5-star from Florida.

If they spent 30 million then they're idiots and will quickly realize that the return on investment for college players is nowhere close to that. I expect this will settle down pretty quickly as big money boosters start talking and negotiate amongst themselves to artificially cap spending for NIL to something reasonable.

After all, you can't just throw money at players. They have to be paid to perform some function for a company. Otherwise it's an inducement and it's still against the rules. University employees cannot offer money to recruits, nor can universities negotiate deals for recruits. Again, it's against the rules. And employees of large companies that offer stupidly large NIL deals to one university's players and ignore the other's in-state run the risk of having people go to the competition (I will never buy a vehicle at Herrin-Gear, for example).

It will take care of itself at some point. This doesn't mean I'm necessarily happy about it, as anyone with half a brain could see that large schools with devoted followings have now been given a blank check to buy players at-will.

Why should he care. He already has his money.

This all started from a sour grapes Oklahoma msg board guy. It's great talking points so it's taken off. You're not spending $25-30mil on a signing class.

From the way it was presented by Lugenbill this morning, Texas law allows for Texas schools to use NIL as a recruiting tool, that they?re structured deals over multiple years, and other states like MS are in the process of going in to amend their NIL law to match the competitive edge Texas has. There may not be much to it, but A&M beat out Bama by 11 points and is averaging right at a 95 rating per player for this class.

MSU and OM may as well save their money because A&M and TX can spend whatever they want to. We will get primarily the players we always have, but the occasional 5 star may be even less likely.

Until something changes with aTm they are still not in the class of Bama, UGA, LSU or Oklahoma. They fall in the next tier with Auburn, Texas and Florida. That?s the traditional 8-4/9-3 group.

We're 22nd ranked this year in recruiting and were 26th last year, 28th the year before, 24th the year before, 27th the year before.... So basically, nothings changed for us. We've had 7 5 stars sign ever and 3 of those were from the 2002 class. I think Mullen had 2 in his entire tenure. I guess it's possible we get less 5 starts but this wasn't something we were really pulling much of anyway. We didn't get a single one between 2005 and 2013.

Yeah it's all gonna pretty much stay the same. You can still only have 85 on scholarship and 25 per year. The bamas of the world will still get who they were getting before and we'll get who we get. Only difference about paying players now as opposed to the past is now it's not against the rules but this has been going on since recruiting started.

Of course they aren't in the group with the elites, but getting classes like they got this year is how you crack into that group. They got a Georgia and bama type class this season. Now they have to do it 2 more times... that's what makes bama and Georgia so successful, stacking great classes
