Shameless self-plug bump. No one wants to discuss?

I wasn't upset to see Shump come in. I was actually sort if excited about it.

If he leaves after 4 years, we lose a year of him regardless.
We can help limit Perk's touches and keep
    him healthy.
He can catch the ball as well as anyone on the team.
He can help between the tackles.

I like the move... like you said... "if they use him".

That's pretty much been the problem for over a year now, though. J-Rob averages 6.0 YPC, but gets 10 or fewer touches a game. And he's a more complete RB than Shump, for now. We'll see how we use him going forward, but he's certainly our most physical RB. I'd love to see us run the inverted wishbone with Dak, J-Rob, Shump, and Holmes. That would be a badass formation for us.

JRob has yet to get 10 carries in a game- Shump won't get that many either in any of the last 11 games this season

And that is why I was/am totally against burning his redshirt. Even if he leaves in 4 years instead of 5, it's a waste for all of 5 carries a game this season. They'll be a fun 5 carries, but it's still only 5.

we can get him ready to go for next season.
we can use him during garbage time to save perk reps.
we can use him late in games when we need tough yards to eat clock.
we can use him near the goal line.
he's got better hands than any other RB.
He can now play STs so we don't lose our starting CBs on punt coverage.
    etc...
    etc...
    etc...

we need guys who can give us quality minutes right now and he can clearly do that. I'm not thrilled about the outlook of his true freshman year vs. his 5th year senior year. Makes it seem like a waste, but he's clearly needed this year IMO.

You do it for recruiting purposes. Players want to play and we are showing a willingness to do that now. Now if they aren't ready then yea redshirt them but if they can give you some good productive snaps a game and are highly recruited you play them.

I'm on the "shoulda saved the red-shirt" side ... at least until we get a better dose of the RB's that are in-waiting
