Upon rewatchibg the game I wanted to list a couple of observation..

- AJ Jefferson is an absolute monster.

- Nick James is unblock-able head to head

- Tolando Clevand is just simply not very good

- Richie Brown is getting a bad wrap.. He had a great game

- Zack Jackson does not need to be starting

- D Lee needs to get more reps

- Claybourn is our most talented OLineman

- Coman is still sub par

- dak was a little off... He will be fine though

- graves was great.

He led the team with 11 Tackles. Could have had 5-6 more, but still a great game. He will be fine and just showed some rust like most of our players.

- Nick James is unblock-able head to head- played very well and physical

- Tolando Clevand is just simply not very good- his coverage was as soft as GrandMomma's titties

- Richie Brown is getting a bad wrap.. He had a great game- played well and made good reads, needs to lock up better

- Zack Jackson does not need to be starting - agreed

- D Lee needs to get more reps- sing it Reverand

- Claybourn is our most talented OLineman- Ive been saying this for 2 years

- Coman is still sub par- disagree here. We had him playing CF and soft.

- dak was a little off... He will be fine though- we hope so

- graves was great.- one of the best surprises of the night

Not much to add to that.
I guess I'll pile on and say Cleveland was by far the weakest link.
I noticed on one series C. Jones got to the QB, the next play they double teamed him and he still got through, the next play they tripled him. Talk about commanding respect.

Just some random observations I haven't seen mentioned yet. I've only made it through the first half and part of the 3rd quarter.

1) Southern Miss never really stopped us at all in the first half. There were 4 drives that didn't end in TD's, the fumble into the end zone, the Fred Ross drop on 2nd down and Ashton losing his balance on 3rd down forcing a punt, a 3 and out after the goal line stand when Dan was halfway trying to just run out the clock anyway, and the incomplete hail mary. For the most part we did what we wanted and only were stopped by our own miscues.

2) We got away with a blatant block in the back on the Holloway kick return TD. Happened right before he broke past the last level.

3) I paid special attention to the long pass plays we gave up over the middle and the TD. 2 plays were the walk-on LB/S (Ward) getting completely turned around. 2 plays were from Jiles and Redmond playing soft and protecting the sideline on slants towards the middle of the field. This had to be by design. The worst was the TD where Beniquez lost the TE and Market was way, way late in getting over to help out. 4 of those 5 are correctable simply by personnel or scheme adjustments. The last one, not so much. Market has got to have better instincts than that, period.

4) Justin Johnson got bumped hard off his route on Dak's first throw to him that fell incomplete. Originally I thought it was a bad throw but was probably borderline PI. Also, it is good to see we are making an effort to get Johnson involved in the red zone.

Disagree on the block in the back. One of our guys had the defender engaged in a block and he tried the "turn your back to the block and throw up your hands" trick. Not gonna get that call.

Rewatched the game last night to put my lingering USM questions to rest, & move on. What I saw:

• After watching the game live I didn’t understand why ppl were down on Rufus Warren. After re-watching, I confirmed those saying he was bad were unfounded. He had no more than 3 negative plays – one of which resulted in a sack, & was very bad. On that play, he didn’t set a good base & payed for it, but that’s something you work on. The rest of the line played fairly well IMO, and Clayborn is the only one I didn’t see have at least 2 negative plays. Knowing Rufus’ career arc, I don’t expect perfection out of a first time LT so I’ll take 2-3 negatives along w/ the positives & washes. Hevesy commented that he didn’t play the full 60 minutes like he’s capable, b/c he’s never played a full 60 minutes, & that comes w/ experience. He also didn’t go to the third level to block as I’d like to see, but that seemed to be scheme-related as he was trying to stay in formation w/ Malone. He had quick feet in pass pro, & when he did get out & run, he showed some speed. Displayed strength at times but needs to work on his punch. No way we’re giving up on Rufus any time soon.

• I was impressed by Clayborn & Desper, and as of now I’ll say we upgraded at C & RG, esp. in terms of strength & athleticism. Clayborn played almost error free, but I was esp. pleased w/ Desper. One play he kept 2 rushers at bay when Senior tripped in pass pro. Senior and Malone were solid but both had a few negative plays.

• Justin Johnson is just as refined a blocker as he is a receiver. This guy knows football. I saw him juking & making head fakes w/o the ball, just to get in better position to throw his block. When this guy adds some strength, look out, b/c he already understands spacing and running lanes to a T. More receivers from Hoover please.

• I couldn’t tell if Torrey Dale was being blocked or if he was doing the blocking. If we need someone to occupy a single blocker, he’s the man for the job, but he simply can’t disengage.

• I think JT Gray is the answer at Will. Should not be a wholesale yank, but I hope to see that transition develop over the season as he gets experience.

• I’d like to see Brandon Bryant play tougher w/ a little more of a chip. If he starts throwing his body around out there he could do some damage. That said, he seemed to play under control & make sure he was doing the right thing, which is probably more important as a FR.

• Bear Wilson opened an IHOP Saturday night & it stayed open past midnight. I wish I had watched him block more during the actual game. The play he made 3 blocks while escorting Dak down the sideline is the sort of thing you see from linemen on the last play to the win the game in cheesy football movies. He did it again later, w/ 2 key blocks & a pancake on 1 play. He doesn’t just mirror DBs & hand fight either, he’s looking to throw his 235 lb frame into somebody, put them in the dirt, then do it again. Some ppl call it cockstrong, some ppl call it grown man strength, but whatever it’s called, USM’s secondary felt it. Bear made some money Sat. night, & if he does that on film all year, he will be a Day 1 pick.

Rewatched the game last night to put my lingering USM questions to rest, & move on. What I saw:

• Bear Wilson opened an IHOP Saturday night & it stayed open past midnight.

Makes me wonder if this was done intentionally for two reasons.

1. To show scouts his ability to block -- since we didn't necessarily need Bear to win the game it was a good opportunity for him to work on other aspects of his game

2. Not giving away the playbook/forcing Dak to throw to someone else.

I have literally never seen us have worse luck out of the gate in my life than that game. I think the 9pm kick off had a ton to do with it in all honesty. It's hard to keep a team basically playing a live-scrimmage/charity game on the road motivated until 9 friggen PM. Motivation will not be a factor Saturday. Don't care how late it is.

From what I heard on campus is that we ran one defense all night. Never really changed anything for obvious reasons.

I have literally never seen us have worse luck out of the gate in my life than that game. I think the 9pm kick off had a ton to do with it in all honesty. It's hard to keep a team basically playing a live-scrimmage/charity game on the road motivated until 9 friggen PM. Motivation will not be a factor Saturday. Don't care how late it is.

USM had 4 possessions to our 4 plays at one point and all but 1 of those possessions our defense rocked their ass pretty good. Seems like every play they gained yards on was soft coverage from Cleveland. They certainly had reason to be gassed late in the game and give up some yards but all in all they only gave up 6 more points the rest of the game.

Also Dak is 3/3 on our first drive then doesn't touch the ball again for at least 30 minutes realtime, of course its gonna be hard for him to get a rhythm in a game like that. Even still, he had a decent game.

We had a key 3rd down play where Gabe Myles was wide open on a drag route, but Dak couldn't get him the ball b/c he had to leave the pocket due to Warren getting beat on a speed rush. And remember, this is USM we are talking about. I'm not ready to give up on Warren, but I'm very concerned.

Defensively, we have the personnel in our first 11. We have got to stop playing sub-par players in the back 7. There were a couple of guys that played in the back 7 that should not be on the field.
