Didn't he play some already this year? How can he redshirt?

I believe he had a death in the family that made him miss South Alabama.
-
Hell, he hadn't played in the past three games, missed UAB and USA due to his grandmothers death.

He would need, you know, a medical condition.

Yep, not sure where the med redshirt would come from without an injury. There has got to be more to this than a death in the family. You don't miss 3 games because your grandma dies. Not saying it isn't a bad deal....it's terrible....but there has to be more to him missing 3 games. Does anybody know anything about this?

He didn't ever take a regular redshirt (played as a true freshman last year), so a medical redshirt would be pretty easy to obtain ... if he is actually hurt. Is he?

He's not hurt. They watch that a lot closer than they use to. Going to be hard to have an injury in the last 2 weeks when he wasn't here.

Yep, starting to appear he is in some sort of doghouse.
-
Could be doghouse. Could be an injury we don't know about. Could be that he's missed so much time and Beckwith is playing well that Mullen didn't want to throw him into the fire unprepared. Only time will tell

I don't think it means this^ at all. He's supposedly a really good kid. I'd be shocked if it was a doghouse issue

Because he hasn't used a regular redshirt, the NCAA is a lot more lenient in granting a medical redshirt. If he has some kind of injury, even if it wouldn't normally be a season-ending injury, we could probably spin that into a medical redshirt for him.
To be eligible for a medical redshirt, you can have only played in 3 or fewer games, all in the first half of the season, so he'd meet those requirements easily. Plus, he may be good enough to go to the NFL after Year 4 anyway, rendering this whole discussion moot.

Unless he is going to miss a good bit more time I really don't want him to redshirt. We are definitely going to need him this year.
