Defense cost us this one. Not the relief pitchers.

Pitching outside of McPherson, Valincius, Gleason, and maybe Stone needs to be more consistent. The talent is there but we hit batters in bunches and it seems like we are the world champs at hanging two strike sliders that get hit to the moon. It sucks that we basically lost the game on a couple of strike out passed balls that ended up getting on base and letting runs score. We have some growing to do when it comes to the little things.

USM could be really good too.

Yep, giving up too many free base runners and then giving up long balls behind them. Just like the UCLA game, we outhit USM tonight 9-7 but gave up 7 runs on 7 hits just like giving up 8 runs on 8 hits against UCLA mostly due to lots of extra base runners being put on through HBPs and walks.

They do love giving up homers. How many have they given up in the 8th and 9th? I think we are at like 9 or something.

You have a banger down 1-2 and call a fastball over the plate (with a guy who's going to see 2-3 hitters at most)? We've got to be smarter calling pitches in key situations.

100% correct. zero reason to throw a fastball for a strike right there.

Webb has been very good. Last night was Sweeney's first bad game of the season. Not sure if starting had an effect on that or not. Davis has been very good when we don't make him pitch more than two innings. Pitzer should pitch more. I was encouraged by the way Foster pitched too.

The vast majority of the pitchers who have struggled are true freshmen Or Billingsley who is a new pitcher as well.

I suspect we will pitch the freshmen less once conference play starts unless it's a blowout like Arizona State or Virginia Tech or it's a midweek game against a HBCU.
