Ww dont defend the 3 point shot well at all under Jans and that is all Nate Oates focuses on. Jans will never beat a Nate Oates coached team. I mean we have zero shot to hold Bama below 80 so unless our offense is playing out of its mind....

Kenpom has our defense 7th in the sec. This league is just so freaking good offensively: 11 sec teams in the top 50 offensively in kenpom.
Tenn has the best defensive coach in the sec, and they've given up 82.5 ppg in first 4 sec games.

I've been up and down on Jans. I really think he is a solid coach, but I think he does his best work at lower tier programs. He can coach up a bunch of lesser talented mid major guys and probably actually upset some teams while doing so, his style of coaching fits that underdog, grit and grind type player who just works hard, defends and rebounds... he has had success at a lower level with those type players. But that doesn't work in the SEC, you need athletes up and down the roster who can score in multiple ways, you need shooters, you need skilled big men etc. That bring your lunch pale to work style of coaching in this league only gets you so far.
Our most skilled player is Josh Hubbard who is 5'9" with alot of limitations due to his size (not his fault), Davis Flemming has a bright future and looks like he can develop into a really good skilled big but he is a true Freshman, Jayden Epps is pretty skilled as well but also has limitations... and that's really all the skill we have, everyone else is a junk yard dog type player. Your aren't going to win like that.
The more that I think about it, last years team is Jans best team to date in terms of talent. Hubbard, Kugel, Murphy, Melendez, Harris, Matthews, Nwoko, Russell etc. That team had pretty much everything but Jans couldn't do much with that team either.

Barring a scandal, Jans job is safe for next season. He completely whiffed on post/wing players in the portal this year. All of our best players from last year (except Hub) transferred out.
If we had kept Nwoko and Murphy, we would be a completely different team. Hubbard, Epps, Mcgee( we don't have a real 3 on this team), Murphy, Nwoko. That lineup would win a lot more games.
We do not have a real 4 or 5. Ballard is soft as charmin. I hate watching him play. The Euro is a good bench piece.
Amir Ali has done a great job holding down left and right bench. Achor can do a decent job rebounding, but he can't throw it in the ocean.

Biggest problem I see besides tiny guards is we lack a 3 guy. Somebody that's 6'6 and gives us 13/6 every night plus play some D.

That's what this board thrives on. I wonder how many of these geniuses run their business this way. They always know more than every coach, AD and University President but they never get any of those jobs when they come open. Wonder why?

Jans' job is definitely safe but I am starting to lose faith in him. He should thank his lucky stars that he has had Hubbard the past couple of years because without him our offense would be awful. Theoretically we should still have Hubbard for another year but Jans has had multiple seasons now to add and keep other solid contributors around Hubbard and has failed to do so. If he had built around Hubbard with another 1 or 2 big time guys we could really have had something this season but he that hasn't happened. Feels like a totally lost opportunity. When Jans first got here we at least had hard nosed defense to hang our hat on but that seems to be long gone.

I agree and especially in the NIL era. Player coaches are going to succeed more than ass chewers.

Achor has been a big surprise and a welcome one also but if Hub goes cold or they force him into 3s we dead meat. We do miss defense down low. Nothing wrong with the scoring but teams are taking more than 10 shots the last 2 games. So far this year we are leading in most stats including turnovers but the opps are shooting more FTs than us. We are actually even in the 3PT cat.

I don?t want to fire Jans. His pay should be cut and his NIL funds cut and Men?s basketball should be treated like the 4th most important sport on campus, but I?m fine with Jans at $2.5 million and $ 3 milllion allowance for NIL

I don’t know what is going on with Jans. If we don’t have enough money to get players. If we just have gotten lazy. If it’s the regular MSU way that coaches start out good then just become very mediocre.
Jans has not forgotten how to coach. Anybody that can get a team to the NCAA tournament without anyone that can shoot a 3pt shot has to be darn good (Jans 1st year).
But what I have seen from Jans and this team this year something is not right. The last two games just down right embarrassing. Being embarrassed does not sit well with me and especially true the amount of coin we are paying Jans. Selmon needs to have a come to Jesus with Jans.

Looks like it was just a lot of bad evaluations in the front court with portal players. Sounds like we need to spend some money on some player personnel staff

Well right now LSu is kicking the sh&* out of the Blue. Of course they're playing in BR And it's halftime. But KY 2-12 at the 3.

LSU 0-3 playing for their first conference win. Folks will race here though to say Big Blue will be top three in the end. *****
