Yep. That's another good one. And he would've stayed for a while if I had to guess. I don't think he jumps to LSU when Nick leaves. It would've taken him a year to build at least. But the recruiters we would've had on staff would've been stupid because I imagine Kirby comes with Will. We would've had:
Jimbo Fisher-HC
Will Muschamp-DC
Derek Dooley-RB Coach
Lance Thompson-RC
Kirby Smart-DB Coach

Or, pivoting to another sport, what if we had pushed more for Roy Williams when we offered him the job in 86.
To put that into perspective, we could've had Roy Williams, Steve Spurrier, and Ron Polk all on campus at the same time.
roy williams was never, ever taking our job.

He was considering it. Then he met a student walking on campus and the kid told him to not take the job. He followed up with us about that and the overall perception and we basically just agreed with the student and said it'd be a tough job. Guess who was the one relaying that message. Mr. Poor Ole himself, Larry Templeton.

We would have spent four or five years battling Les Miles' LSU for #1 in the West and stealing some of their 4* and 5* recruits while OM dicked around with Orgeron.
It would have been GLORIOUS.

We would've been in the game with Joe McKnight. I know that much.

Whittingham leaving Utah after 21 years makes me wonder if the rumors he was interested were real. Point is we've had many chances to better ourselves but we cheap out everytime until we lucked up with Mullen then got semi serious with Leach.

He was very interested and I believe he would've 100% taken it in 17. I don't know about 19 and I know he wouldn't have taken it in 24. But I, for a fact, know that he was very interested in the job in 2017.

How close was Chris Petersen becoming our HC.
I remember even Boise State radio talk shows thought they had lost him to us briefly.

There was some interest from both sides and it got serious for a second but it got blown out in the open and we kind of lost negotiating power.

Gene and Steve started reporting on it and that's how the Boise St brass got wind of it and that kind of blew everything out in the open. I still don't think he would've come but those two ended any real chance we had of it.

He interviewed , was interested, and was offered, but did indeed turn it down. Urban legend has it, supposedly in his book, that he saw a rebel flag hanging in a dorm room and changed his mind. I haven't read his book, nor do I plan to, but I've been told this over the years.

ESPN ran it on their ticker late one evening. Even showed money. I think something like 12 million over 4 years. Then it fell apart the next day. Ultimately came down to care for his son.
Or so the story goes

Byrne and Peterson knew each other already. We almost locked it down but he got cold feet and backed out. Worked out fine for us with Mullen thank goodness.
