Exactly.
One of the reasons Florida lost Kiffin is they refused to let him run the program like an NFL team.
Even Florida with all their money hasn't figured this thing out yet.

Once you get past 4 and 5-stars, should you even bother much with HS recruits? Seems the better play is invest in a more known commodity (transfers)

Because the people evaluating for the sites are not professionals. Ahamd Hardy types are out there that get totally missed.

3 star HS guys, even if just for depth, are much cheaper than what you have to pay in the portal.
And you have some 3 star guys that turn into studs.

With all due respect, we shake out nearly every year in the top 30 in America for recruting and that's hasn't exactly panned out for us in a while. Maybe we're the ones not great at evaluating?

And I get that, but if 24/27 (no idea on this exact number) are less than 4 star, seems the chances of you being wrong are more than them being wrong.
I honestly don't know the correct path in this new era, but anyone that needs developing seems risky. If they don't play right away, they'll leave, and that money was wasted.

I think if I were in charge, I would take my 18 best HS signees, and use the rest of my resources on transfers/retaining

I think the issue has been the fact that the bamas of the world could horde the players. Now they have to live with less talent, meaning not as deep. That's why we are seeing all teams beatable. So while we will remain in that top 30 from JUCO/HS, we have to live in the top 15 in portal finds.
This gives MSU a ready and a steady team. The era of every 4 to 5 years if we play our cards right (train up some younger players while having a sr vet team) is truly over.

We're usually a top 30 team in America until leach died and things went to hell.
Even when not ranked in top 30 due to losses from a tough schedule, we are usually a top 30 team. Cringe at least.
Heck we are probably top 35 now. The analytics, per Parker Fleming, say the "average" team would have less than 5 wins against our schedule. So we're above average at least.

That is a good pick up size that can run for the LB group. We lack speed there and it shows.

I don't care about this, but I know some do. MS ST is currently ranked 28th, and Ole Miss is ranked 26th.

For reference, we were 48th like 7 days ago.
