Also getting to Starkville was a total pain in the ass up to 1992 when they started 4 laning 45. before that time most of 45v was a 2 lane HWY with no shoulders and it was white knuckle driving esp at night.
I remember before 82 was 4 lane all the way and you had to take 182 right after Mathiston and be on that two lane road for like the last 15 miles and that was a pain in the butt. I can't imagine 45 being 2 lane all the way.
