So who will start for us next year?
OF - 3 out of Aidan Teel, Vytas Valincius, James Nunnalee, Bryce Chance, Gehrig Frei?
1B - ?? One of guys above? Chone James?
2B - Gatlin Sanders?
SS - ?? Another transfer or Frei?
3B - Ace Reese
C - Kevin Milewski, presumably?
DH - Noah Sullivan if he doesn't go pro, or someone listed above?
Am I forgetting anyone?
-
Well, Bevis from Ball State is likely the 1B. Also, Stallman was originally signed to be Hines' replacement at 1st base when we thought Hines was going pro, so I assume he could play there some as well. Also, Woodson (transfer from NC State) will likely be in the mix to start at either 2B or SS.

We got to get thru the draft first. We gonna lose at least 1 and could lose 2-3 before it's over. I dont see Frei returning the way he swings the bat. All he did was show scouts he is a team player thats willing to learn a new position. We have others that will be tempted

I really want his bat back.

Good chance Teel goes pro which would put Chance in CF again.

And the 1st baseman portal could get grabbed as well. He swings and misses too much but has serious pop. We gonna be sweating him also

Like Coach said we really won't have a good idea of what we have until after the draft. Also, if I had to guess under O'Connor we will have our freshman and JUCO class arrive the first week in July to begin workouts and that will give us an even better idea of what we have most likely. I can attempt to piece it together though because we have addressed most of our needs so we do have a pretty decent idea of what we have.
Fri- Volincius
Sat- McPherson
Sun- Foster
Midweek- Always a toss up. Could be a freshman or a potential returning player like a Ben Davis. I'm going to say Jackson Logar for now but who really knows? I would keep an eye on William Kirk who entered the portal recently and played at Virginia. Missed all of last year with an injury but if we land him he will compete for rotation spot and might end up being in the weekend rotation or midweek spot.
Closer- Maddox Webb
Set-up- Dane Burns
Relief ace Tyler Pitzer
Again this is going to be very fluid. If we keep anyone from the Siary, Ben Davis, Nate Williams group it will be a big plus. We have some freshmen and JUCO pitcher that will be competing for innings as well.
Catcher- Milewski is the starter for now. I believe we will add another catcher in the portal that is a Johnny Long/Joe Powell back up type. Alex Sosa would be ideal and would probably make Milewski the back up. Also have Jackson Owen coming back as the third guy. Good chance we add a couple of freshmen here as well depending on the draft.
1B- Blake Bevis, Reed Stallman, Vytas Valincious, and maybe Gehrig Frei are going to be the top candidates here. Draft pending of course.
2B- Chone James with Gatlin Sanders backing him up. Could also see Ryder Woodson start with a strong fall/spring. I could see them giving Gehrig Frei a look here too.
3B- Ace Reese. Even my Mom knows he is our third baseman.
SS- I'm pretty sure we're going to add one from the portal. Not getting Becker is very disappointing but there are still some pretty good options out there even though they aren't as good as Becker. My guess is we get one this week. If hell freezes over and we completely strike out we might be looking at either Woodson or Jones at SS. As far as the portal goes my preference would be Maddox Latta from Cal State Fullerton who A&M was after but they just added another SS in the portal.
LF- I think Bryce Chance starts here. And I do think he will find his way into the lineup.
CF- Aiden Teel
RF- James Nunnalee. I know he played LF at Virginia but I'm going off of the skill sets of Chance and Nunnalee and putting the guy with the better arm in RF.
Pretty much all of the first base candidates are outfield candidates as well.
DH- Noah Sullivan if he comes back and I think he probably will. If not we'll just put one of our first basemen here or Milewski depending on how catcher shakes out.
-
And I'll say this too- even with the present hole at SS that is a much better team on paper than what we had this time last year. I remember being very concerned about CF and MIF plus the fact we didn't really add another catcher which I thought was risky given Highfill's injury status. I was also concerned about our starting pitching. We should all be thankful that Siary stepped up.

Draft in July and the Signing Period and the Free Agent Offers will dictate many things. My sorting by Risk on Impact Players
(No Chance for MSU)
SP- Jojo Parker - Day One Starting SS for MSU
(Almost No Chance for MSU)
SP-Bauer - Draft, LHP at 100 mph - Potential Marquee Starting Pitcher
SP-Harmon- Draft, people say he is border line 1st round - Potential Marquee Starting Pitcher
(Slim Chance for MSU)
OF- Jacob Parker - Draft, the brother JoJo Is 0% chance of playing for MSU - Would be a great collegiate player
SP- Pico - Draft, if MLB has concerns with health? - Would be a 2025 weekend starter
(Surprises that we won't know until Hoopsdawg tells us)
SP- Siary - Draft, I wonder how high he needs to go to accept his draft position - Would be a 2025 weekend starter
RP- Davis - Draft, he is a Pavia Freshman this year, so he stick without losing leverage - Would be the prime long reliever
UT- Mershon - Draft - If he is as twitchy as his brother, no telling what good things and positions he might play for MSU
CF- Teel - Draft - Would be a star CF and All-SEC Candidate
(Shocks that we won't know until Coach34 comes to dunk on us)
UT- Sully- Draft/FA - Does he want a 5th year of college, even with NIL, or chase the dream? - Would be the DH and team Captain in 2025
-
good stuff here, mr engineer

Would Frei fall in the surprises section? Who else is a draft risk? I know some of our portal commits are borderline.

On3 has the OF Valincius brother ranked as the #10 portal player. I don’t know how accurate that site is, but he put up good numbers last year.

I think Frei 100% gets drafted. The question is can we offer him enough to stay and play SEC baseball in a palace instead of slumming it in the High A bus leagues.
I think Sullivan returns and enjoys another year of SEC baseball altho I could be wrong.
I think Siary is gone
I think Davis is gone
No idea on Teel

Frei is one I wondered about. I think he is a good player. This dude hit 300 in the SEC, 4th best on the team. Should be better next year. Hit 286 versus SEC Friday pitchers, that's pretty good and he even missed most of the Missouri Friday Massacre with a bad dive injury.
MLB won't like the lack of position. Was scary at 2B. He looked out-of-place in Left Field. Does not steal bases. From a recency perspective, was not clutch or iconic during the regional.
-
He played 3B his career in college and we never played him there. MLB will love his bat and that he is a switch. He will be drafted. The question is will they offer enough to get him to leave

I thought he was the Fall Ball 3B and poor defensive performance made MSU move Ace Reece from OF to 3B.
You are correct, Frei was 3B at North Alabama. Ace Reece was RF for Houston.
That said, someone could draft him. That's an SEC 300 hitting guy to replace, but all the BOC portal boys should be able to replace that. But I do hate to lose a switch hitter.

We promised Reese he would start at 3B when we recruited him last year.
