Greg Byrne about to make the biggest hire of his entire career!
Who does he call first? Does he call someone he thinks will take the job and is his first choice or does he call 2 or 3 coaches to gauge their possible interest under the guise of asking them who they think would be a good fit for Alabama?
They ain't hiring a coordinator.
They ain't hiring an old guy.
They ain't hiring an unsuccessful guy.
They ain't hiring an inexperienced Head Coach.
They might hire a coach currently in the Pros.
But we know they are going to go after the best experienced coach that Byrne thinks will take the job for the money, prestige, and yes, even the challenge.
Now who fits that last description?
-
There is a long list that fits that last description.
-
Mullen to Bama. He can't fold to a team if he has he A on his chest! Harbaugh going to the Pros.

I'd guess there are only about 5-6 coaches that realistically fit that description.

Experienced coach that Byrne thinks would take the job for the money, prestige, and challenge. That would be a long list of Head coaches. The most egotistical folks in America.

I bet Burn aint making the hire. I'm sure Saban had his say in it.

They ain't hiring an inexperienced Head Coach. Lanning has two years HC experience
By many accounts Norvell and Lanning are the top two candidates. Sark ain't leaving Texas and Demeco Ryans isn't leaving the Texans. DeBoar has no SEC experience. Dabo, although only 54, has lost his fast ball and been slow to adapt to NIL/Portal. Lane is too immature and did not have a graceful departure from Bama. Saban always put the program ahead of himself, he lived Alabama football.
The first characteristic Bryne listed is, "strong in recruiting." Norvell and Lanning fit that category.
-
Does Byrne retain the ninja title if Lanning is hired?
If they keep the retirement under wraps and hired Lanning before the news of the retirement broke, the ninja lives on.
-
My guess is it's already all been worked out. No way Byrne didn't know this was coming
-
I just don't get all Lanning love.......Just not enough proven H/C experience there if I'm calling the shots...........I'd rather have Lane than him......

He's made some boneheaded in game decisions and only has two years experience at a stop were everyone has success.
Lane is not getting the Bama job unless they miss on 4 or 5 candidates. He's too immature, Saban always put the program ahead of himself. Lane draws too much attention to himself.
-
Yeah I'm not completely sold on Lanning either.
It's a solid hire to get a P5 coach but.... I'm expecting them to hire a huge huge name.
I get Kiffin has baggage and all the Twitter trolling he does (or some intern at OM does). But damn, he is a good gameday coach and that's tough to pass on.
Our MSU luck... it won't be Kiffin... it will be Dan Fn Mullen. Hahaha.

Lanning has a 20 million dollar buyout.
-
I'll say this.... remember on Alabama. I know it's a different world today... with so much exposure and money.
But it took them two hire/fires to get from Bear to Stallings. Then it took them 3 hire/fires from Stallings to Saban.

That may very well be true but the game has changed and Kiffin has embraced it and players love him and he's a media sweetheart. I don't think they'll hire him but with Bama's talent they would be tough.

Bama is a great job but it's not better than several others in this new NIL/portal world. Many programs have more money than Bama.
Bama will see a drop off going forward, regardless if Saban stayed or the next guy. They already have, as they just went without a title for 3 straight years for the first time since Saban got there.
-
Arnett to Bama and he'll kick our butts for 20 years.
It's a joke, of course. But it would also be standard MSU luck.

This ^^^, plus why does anyone think that AD's make these hires on their own? There is a great deal of input from those that are paying the bills.

But to your point, this looks like it needs to be a plug and play. History shows they don't like slow rebuilds and to them, 3 years without a title better not turn into 5 without a title. We can say things have changed all we want but WE ain't Alabama!
We can say the landscape has shifted and there are now many more programs with the clout and money to dethrone the darling of the SEC but those programs ain't Alabama. If Byrne wants to be there in 2 years, he better get the hire right. He wants to be SEC Commissioner in 5 years, he better get this hire right.
It may not be Kiffin, but there are fewer guys that Fanbase will accept than any of us may think.
Byrne may not be doing this hire alone, but it will be his head the natives come after if he gets it wrong.
I agree it is a high probability it is a Saban Disciple!
