And my guess is Lemonis is concerned throwing Sims potentially back to back days. Hasn't done it all year. That had to be a consideration by Lemonis.
The plan very clearly seems to be protect a Bednar/Sims possibility for an elimination game.
You don't make decisions based on rain. Again, we just needed 3 outs from him. And your info about back 2 back days is incorrect and may not have been an issue if we had won.

Very disappointed in the bullpen. Hooty gave us about as good of a start as we could have reasonably expected. The bullpen did not compete tonight. It was more of a steerpen than a bullpen tonight

Got to hit your spots to set it up, but yes our pitch calling is as predictable as the sun rising in the East in the morning. For some reason we have been successful with spin rate and power arms.
If we don?t have either of those, teams tee off.

You had a great shot to win THIS one. You don't know what tomorrow will bring. Dumb to make it harder to win today because tomorrow may be even better.

Exactly that Clark and Rowdey did not have good AB there with the game on the line and then Lemonis had a really tough choice there.
I think he knew the rain was coming, Smith had been solid the inning before and decided to keep him out there and either he'd do fine or the rain would come. But then he did the one thing we didn't want and walked their leadoff guy. I do think I might have stuck with him there to face their 3 and 4 but he's not as big a strikeout guy and I think we chased the K's too much there.
Unless we get a miracle finish we're just going to have to regroup, hope the bats are better tomorrow and hope Bednar has his A game again.

Gonna be something when they jump out to a 5-0 lead tomorrow and we never get to pitch Sims because we're never in the game. Going to make Lemo wish he had done this different tonight if that happens

Don't disagree. But you can't win with Sims in that situation and you get him max for 1 inning. If we score and make it 6-5, Sims is 100% in.
I think the play on the fly was for Smith/Stinnett to get through the 9th into the delay and let MacLeod come in after the delay for long relief. Once Smith shit the bed and walked Antico, it became try and get the delay to come before we have to pitch. And it backfired.
I get it. You have to make a plan for all contingencies here. Long and short term. It's not easy. And they made the decision Sims wasn't the play tied in the 9th. I'm not gonna say that's wrong. They know this team better than any of us. If that's what they set out to do, that's their call.

I agree with this, at first I was anti bringing sims in but the anti sims crowd has this assumption we will be winning late in the game tomorrow. Sims means very little if we are losing. We should have brought him in. But lemo had a very short time to make the decision, why he makes the big bucks.

Couldn't you use that same logic for starting bednar tonight

You can NOT blame Lemonis tonight. Guys have to step up. Throw strikes. Challenge the hitters. Offensively get some hits, score some runs. But for whatever reasons .... it looks like the pressure got to us tonight. Our go to guys didn't get hits in the clutch. Bullpen issuing walks.
Hopefully the nerves are claimed if we take a L. Tomorrow is a new day. State has beat these guys twice. They can win a third game.

I know its a dead horse but I still can't get over Rowdey losing that fly ball. I knew that would continue to haunt us. Cost us 2 runs that inning. Without that we have the lead and Sims can finish it.

Bednar starts the game at 0-0 no matter what. Our chances largely ride on how well he pitches. Not the case with Sims, we have to get it to Sims.
And my main argument for holding Bednar was never that he didn't give us a better chance to win Friday, it was that I liked our chances with Harding and if you win Friday, you get to pitch Bednar completely rested in game 1 Monday.
And that's exactly where we still had a very good chance to be if we go Sims there.

Not only that, but he choked with the bases loaded and left them off the hook.
Tough night for Rowdey. He needs to make up for it tomorrow

Even if Lemonis didn't start Sims in the 9th why not bring him in to try and get 2 outs when TX had the man at 2nd?
