They used a defense alignment not used all year to have more athletes on the field and bring unpredictable pressure.
To be fair - they copied AU's game plan. AU rushed 3, had 1 LB and played 7 DB's. They were able to slow LSU down because they could get pressure with 3 - Clemson couldn't consistently.
Also at the end of the day, with those WR's and a QB playing at that level, i'm not sure what a defense can do.
