    A defenseive comparison Vs ULL

We lost some great players, and had a lot of young guys in there. I wanted to see what the differences were last year to this year.

Last year, It seemed like a great coach avoided the run game with 3 guys that were less than 100 yards from putting up 3000 yards on the ground. They only attempted 26 total rushes. UP TO 7 of those were the QB who finished with negative yards. But the backs:

    Raymond Calais 9 79 8.8 2019 vs
    Raymond Calais 1 9 9.0 2018

    Trey Ragas 9 63 7.0 2019 vs
    Trey Ragas 7 49 7.0 2018

    Elijah Mitchell 14 31 2.2 2019 vs
    Elijah Mitchell 6 0 0.0 2018.

2018 they had (just RBs) 58 yards on 14 attempts. 4.1 ypc

2019 they had (just Rbs) 173 yards on 32 attempts. 5.4 ypc

2 different QBs but compare them anyway:

2018 QB rushing Nunez was 7 for negative 4
2019 QB rushing Lewis was 6 for negative 10.

As you can see, the difference was really in the amount of attempts on running at us. The ULL coach avoided it last year and attacked us there this year and we had a drop off of 1.3 yards per carry. This is the area we have all been looking at.

    On to Pass Defense:

2019: ULL QB was 24/39 that is 61%. He threw 2 picks.
2018: ULL QB was 21/29 that is 72%. He threw 1 pick.

    Passing yards allowed 2018 245
    Passing yards allowed 2019 268

    Sacks, TFL, PD etc

2019 1 Sack, 3 TFLs, and 2 PDs. The stats show no QB Hurries, but I remember him being flushed.
2018 2 Sack, 8 TFLs, and 1 PDs. The stats show 3 QB hurries.

    Total yards given up

    2019: 430
    2018: 310

That's 120 yards difference. 98 of that was on the ground via 12 extra carries.

That's good and all and I appreciate the upbeat post, but our defensive front got pushed around and missed several tackles. That just can't be sugar coated. Was it due to first time rust on young guys that will improve as the season wears on? Time will tell and I sure hope so. But if we had opened yesterday against a team with a pulse we don't walk out with a win with that defensive effort.

The one huge positive I came away with on the offensive side of the ball was Hill and Gibson. I truly believe Gibson would start at most SEC schools. He's an elite back that's just always been behind very elite backs.

And that is going to be the plan for every opponent from now on, run first. Where last year, people knew they couldn't do that.

Really wasn't meant as upbeat or negative. Just an eval on the games. If we correct the missed tackles, we would be in line with last year.

I was as disappointed in our lb play as our dt play, honestly. From eye discipline to missed tackles, lb play was very meh

I disagree with people could not. Their top back last year was averaging 7 yards per carry against us and it's not from breaking a big run. His longest was 15. Had they done more runs they may have had decent numbers like UK. Last year UK had 229 yards against us. Sometimes, a great back is just that... a great back.

I think it was a great experience and learning game for our defense.

Yeah... Not happy with the missed TFLs and Sacks. Those things allow for a team to add plays....

Erroll and Leo never came out of the game..... We need to create depth there to get them some rest.

The only problem I see is locking up when tackling. It is hard to get a guy down when you have three offensive lineman pushing the running back. I keep waiting on a RB to get seriously hurt.

Which is puzzling to me. We didn't list all of our LBs in suspensions or maybe they were and just not listed? Just Gay that I saw.

Only one other lb was suspended. And he's third team. Guess they don't trust brule and Washington enough yet.
