The final decision on the call was made elsewhere, but it had to be unmistakable if it was going to be overturned. It seemed to be unmistakable.

No. The person catching the ball can occupy that space waiting on the ball. If the other player had made the tag, it would have been obstruction. Interference is on the runner.
