You put the shift on for dead pull hitters. You pitch them outside to get them to roll over on top of an outside pitch and hit a weaker ground ball up the middle or to the pull side.
I don't think Duplantis is that kind of dead pull hitter. He seemed very comfortable going with the pitch on the outer half of the plate.
