Just a theory but I bet Cohen's thought process is something like this:
Interview a small range of select candidates including Kiffin. If none of the candidates "wow" him then hire Kiffin for the short term and conduct a new search if he leaves in two to three years.
If it was Kiffen it would be more like ONE year instead of two or three.
