I don't know about that (the "purging" of records, that is). I imagine that these cats (the Mars team) are already in the process of getting the records from the service provider. Or they will after these are received from northern miss. Anyway it would take, maybe, a junior computer science major about 2 minutes to write a program to differentiate the two.

Bottom line is, these dudes are pros, and northern miss has already been exposed as amateurs in this game.

This is what I'm thinking. Even if not you can usually tell pretty easily when cell phone records have been doctored due to usage patterns.
