Thankful though we had an AD smarter than anyone I have ever known, that we pulled from somewhere with plenty of hiring experience and AD marketing ***
Yes this! Especially Bert. Can you even imagine a slow paced offense with that defense?? And with Fitz behind that oline in that offense. Could have completely changed the direction our program headed.

Furman wasn?t really a HC job, obviously.

I hate to repeat myself but there was one article talking about Clemson taking what the “DOGS” did defensively against Bama and won the national title. I hate to talk neg about someone but Lord Have Mercy with that defense Jo should have only lost one game......if that...

NFL talent of Simmons and Sweat on the Dline with Abram at safety, didn't take much else to have a great defense even if the players called their own plays.

That right there is why I never understood why some people held Shoop in such high regard. Like we had 3 first round picks on the same defense. He could drop 7 every play and get pressure. You don't have to be real exotic when you have that type of talent

He was the type of coach we needed on offense that year. Solid and fundamentally sound. Nothing too flashy or crazy.
You won't wow the media with being eccentric like Leach or Joe Lee Dunn but you would win games.

Manny and Bert would have easily taken that team to a better season .
I read somewhere that Furman was the only school in their league with athletic schollys (or their equivalent). If true, he was a terrible coach there, also.

It was Fordham, but you are correct that they were the only school that offered scholarships. Anywhere he has not had a decided competitive advantage, he has failed.
