    Firing Coaches during the season

I just read where Ga Tech is paying Geoff Collins around $11 million dollars for firing him now. If they waited to January, it would have saved them around $5 million. Here is the deal, there season is so bad as there program right now, I'm not sure firing him now really makes much different. Fact is, firing someone this early in the season is kinda dumb to me, and yes, we can say it helps recruiting. Not really like a program such as Ga Tech!

Early signing period in December. You cannot afford to be in a coaching search in January.
The kids that sign in December would just decide to opt out of the signing.
    Things are different now.
Not to mention, if a fan base is not showing up and you are losing millions, then you make up $6 MM in these days pretty fast.

    I agree.

But, get ready for Auburn to fire Harsin next Sunday after LSU destroys them 45-7.

I think it depends on the situation. I think Georgia Southern did a smart thing last year. They fired Chad Lundsford after a 1-3 start, conducted the search in-season and hired Clay Helton. Helton says he had a huge advantage in getting to watch practices for the last month of the season, evaluate the players and engage in recruiting. GA Tech doing it now is probably backwards - they are supposedly going to can their AD today as well. That will put them behind the 8 ball if they don't already have a new AD on the hook, because no AD of any quality will want to come in with a new FB coach he wasn't involved in hiring.
"After dealing with Ole Miss for over a year," he said, "I've learned to expect their leadership to do and say things that the leadership at other Division I schools would never consider doing and to justify their actions by reminding themselves that "We're Ole Miss.""

Ga Tech should have fired Collins last year. If a coach is not showing any kind of improvement by the end of year 3 then it’s time to move on. I am not one for constantly hiring and firing coaches the way Florida and Texas and some places do that, but there should be some type of improvement by at least the end of year 3. Nebraska also kept Frost too long. We did with Croom too he should have been gone after 2006 season

Also, with inflation today, that buyout money (from a contract 3 years ago) might be a bargain ***

The early December signing period has many unintended consequences that have not been good for college football. Firing coaches mid-season is one of them.

I just don't think it makes a whole lot of difference for say a school such as Ga Tech and say recruiting.

But they should have fired him before season.

    Crazy money now days.

Geoff had his work cut out for him recruiting ATL against UGA and everyone else while switching an option team to a 'normal' offense. Can't say I'm gonna shed a tear though.

He probably went of on one of the higher ups after the game. Couldn't happen to a more filthy mouthed dude.

Geoff Collins will be Hugh Freeze's DC at Auburn next season.

(I would put some *** but y'all know it's pretty close to being true.)

I agree. Fire them after the season or before the season. They pretty much knew what they had in collins before this season started and should've fire him after last season. Firing a coach mid season rarely has any benefits for anyone involved.

Exactly. Whoever new coach is will have to start all over and one recruiting class at Ga Tech means nothing. LOL
