It's not a conspiracy. There's some smoke to some things.

We're 2-1, and there's already smoke about firing Leach if we go 6-6 and lose the egg Bowl?

Right about the time Leach signed an extension and got a raise. I get it now.

No, that's not the smoke. The smoke is he might not return of his own choice. But, no date is a given. Just smoke that he's about ready to get out and sip Mai Tais in his hammock in Key West.

OK, well good for him if he does. I was referring to another form of smoke from someone else.

No, Stoops had the luxury of being involved with an AD and fans with common sense. They allowed him to build a program, not demand he win a national title with nothing changed.

There is no smoke. Only wishful thinking by people who think they know more.

Does Spurrier Jr. have enough independence to make changes needed or is he too far into the AR?

Exactly. I think Stoops is a good coach, but he would need to recruit better to have the same type of record in the west. Tennessee finally has their first good coach since Fulmer. It?s going to be more difficult now with them improving. I still think Florida will be better with Napier in a few years. Stoops also benefitted from South Carolina and Missouri making some bad hires, but Beamer might make them better again too. I think he might leave UK in a year or two if he sees UT, UF, USCe and possibly Missouri all improving.

I mean, it came straight from Leach's mouth. But ok.
I have no idea how soon that would happen. He could be talking this year, he could be talking in 5 years.

By the way, Mark Stoops has never won in Starkville. Not once. He's also 0-10 in SEC west road games.

That's not really responsive to the part about him being in the SEC East. Not clear which way that cuts though. On the one hand, he's probably not good enough to win in the SEC West (and by win in the SEC West, I just mean have around a .500 SEC record) and it would have probalby just prolonged the pain if we let a coach like Stoops stick around. On the other hand, the fact that the SEC W is harder means that we probably should be more realistic about what a "winning" coach looks like.

And IMHO that needs to change or in 3 to 4 more years there will be another change.

You will never build anything changing every 3 to 7 years.

It's not 1974. These guys make insane money and move around a lot. Programs have to be aggressive too. But Leach isn't getting fired unless it comes apart.

It is responsive. What division he is in has no influence on firing a coach after 2 to 3 seasons. That's a commitment to the coach and that shows up in recruiting over time. A steady change of coaching usually shows up as a negative in recruiting. Now, if you want to talk about UK in the east? I laid that out. UK was losing in the east before he got there. They were losing in the east for how many seasons after he got there? The point is they allowed him to build that program and a program like that takes time to build.

We will never hire any coach that is going to make MSU an instant recruiting giant. What we can do is show stability and loyalty and recruits see it. So you begin to attract a few more higher rated players every year because relationships are built. We have already took it on the chin by moving our freshmen into starting positions and that allows our new recruits to gain a lot of experience prior to starting... raising the level to a constant. No more 5 to 6 years to have a shot. Every year be in a position to have a shot.
