What a great actor. I think his best character was Smith, Schmit, in Lilies of the field. He did win an Oscar for that.

He became somewhat stereotyped as a good guy, partly because of the way things were at the time in the country....always played pretty much the same character. He was a fine actor.

I agree, but I think historically, we like people to assume the same role in different films. Samuel L Jackson, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and many others are good examples of beloved actors that always played the same guy in different films. Some actors are defined by the characters they play, while other's characters are defined by the actor playing them.
