Receiving totals by the numbers
I was in agreement with most here that say we are still dinking & dunking too much and too many thrown to the RBs. However, when I looked at the actual numbers, they kind of tell a different story. Here are the receptions by player, total yds receiving, and avg yds per reception.
Calvin - 3/67, avg 22.3/rec
Walley - 4/64, avg 16.0/rec (all 4 were at least 15 yds)
Polk - 10/57, avg 5.7/rec
Williams - 5/57, avg 11.4/rec
Thomas - 3/55, avg 18.33/rec
Griffin - 2/29, avg 14.5/rec
Marks - 9/27, avg 3.0/rec
Johnson - 3/14, avg 4.7/rec
So, with the exception of Polk, all WR averaged a first down per catch. Further 27 of 39 passes were caught by the WR. 12 completions to the RB is still too many in my opinion, especially at 3 & 4.7 per reception. I would rather that be about 6 receptions and 6 more runs. However, the overall average was 9.8 yds/catch and 7.9 yds/att. So, at least by the numbers, we were not as dink and dunk as it seemed or as everyone seems to be claiming.
Just curious people's thoughts based on actual numbers.

I'd say the offense as a whole is good... the passes WERE downfield they just weren't over the top of the defense... what I noticed is that they ran the ball on the traditional running situations ( first downs and inside the 10) and were actually very successful.

Our screen game was much improved over last year. We ran a lot more of them and we executed them a fair amount more effectively. WR blocking and OL blocking at the next level on those plays are critical and we did a good job there.
Will is going to have to continue improving pre snap for those numbers to push even further. Got to be able to read the secondary and anticipate openings in zone coverage. I think he will continue to improve there as he sees and studies more complex defensive alignments.

One thing to think about is the throws to running backs are often check downs to avoid a sack or were meant for short yardage (our first TD). I would say those are more productive than numbers show.

7.9 per attempt isn't great

That's a reflection of YAC which is good because that's what this system is mostly about. Getting in space and getting a short pass and turning it into a big gain.
I agree about the screen game being much improved. We really did not have that at all last year.
So the dink and dunk people may not be totally wrong. We're just executing better. When we do execute that is.
