James Wood signs with Padres
According to senior MLB Pipeline writer Jim Callis, Wood signs for 2.6 million. His slot value was just over $1.1 million.
So Wood signs for $1.5 million over slot.
Good for him. Dude just got paid.

Good for him but I still don't understand the argument for even having a slot value if you are going to let teams go that far over. I need to study it more I guess but it just seems like an incredibly broken system to me.

Because the slot values for your picks combined gives you the total amount you're able to spend. So because they went 1.5 million over slot for Wood, they have to go under slot by 1.5 million somewhere among the rest of their picks.
You can sign a player for whatever you want, but it means you have to make up for it somewhere. And not signing a player does not help you, it simply removes the slot value of that pick from your total amount. So it definitely requires strategy and a lot of planning and maneuvering.

Each team gets X amount of dollars for the top 10 rounds I believe
Walk like the King or walk like you don't care who the King is

My problem is that the strategy then becomes to lowball college seniors

I believe they now have a minimum value that you can't go below on signing bonuses. Not sure what it is though.

Lockhart from Arkansas just had a $150K slot value and signed for $2,500. That's the lowest one I've ever seen from a draft pick, and he went in the 9th round.

It's not much. I've seen a signing bonus of only $1,000 for a kid already this year.
Crap like that will force some kids not to come back for their senior year and sign as free agents as a junior if they have to. Why lose a year of playing ball if your not going to get that stupid of a payment.

I just think the current NFL system is no nice where slot value is slot value - makes life so much easier for everyone except agents

I think if you don't offer 40% of slot bonus, you don't get a compensatory pick the next year if they don't sign. But I think as long as they make an offer, they keep the players' rights for the next year, so if you are out of eligibility, you don't have any leverage unless you're willing to go over seas.

Bruns signs his deal with the Dodgers at $2.2 million, about $240,000 under slot value.

I was wrong, I misread the article. It said undrafted free agents have a cap and can't get a bonus more than $20k.

2.5G! With current run-away inflation, that won't last 2 weeks, even in Guymon Oklahoma
I thought you were mistaken by a factor of 10, but the Braves signed their 9th rounder for $7.5K

I think Mangum signed for $50k or something like that and he was a 4th round pick. MLB draft is complete shit for 90% of players. Also, you have to play for shit money for several years even after you get to the show. The only good thing is fully guaranteed contracts.
