Century of Baseball: The College Game

    Revised 3/12/01

College baseball in the years before 1900 rivaled the early major leagues. The college game faded in the 1920's with the rise of the minor leagues, and was devastated by the great depression of the 30's. Fan support was eroded by a decades long controversy over college athletes playing summer baseball for money. Competition from major league baseball on TV brought college baseball to an all time low in the 1950s. Games were played before small crowds and were never televised. An assistant football or basketball coach was usually assigned the job of baseball coach. Cable TV in the 1980s enabled college baseball to finally make a comeback. Soon, attendance once again rivaled that of the pre-1920 era.

The college world series began in 1947. The tentative list is based on College Baseball Scorebook by Kenneth Carlson (Rain Belt Publications, 1996) and old issues of Outing Magazine and Harper's Weekly. Scores and records of many colleges were not available. The 3/12/01 revision includes input from the list of Cappy Gagnon, chairman of the SABR Collegiate Committee. Cappy has extensive knowledge of the number of major league players produced from each conference and many independant teams. E-mail your contributions to mailto:baseball100@home.att.net. Does your favorite college claim any national championships prior to 1947? Can you supply scores of colleges not included in Carlson's book?
