It’s been around a while (sometimes called bullet spin) from Japan or versions of it. Yu Darvish threw a version of it. It doesn’t have any or little backspin depending on how it’s thrown so it has sharper, later break (when done correctly) than a traditional cutter.

You're seeing why it was the right call. No one would ever think you could bring him in for the 3rd to try to finish the game, yet here he is with 7 IP and he may come back for more. With their offense struggling, they needed what he's given them.
